Do you remember the last time you rotated your mattress? Many of us forget to do this, but it's a fact that taking care of of one's mattress is the best way to ensure continued, peaceful sleep, as well as prolonging its useful life.

Some mattresses do not require much maintenance or rotating, but what if your mattress does? Well, check out this short guide:

Should all mattresses be rotated or flipped over?

Not all mattresses are the same, of course, and for this reason, it is always important to read the manufacturer's instructions first. Some models are designed with different layers for different support functions for each part of the body and do not need to be rotated or turned over.

Traditional mattress models, on the other hand, need to be rotated periodically - usually once or twice a year - to prevent premature, irregular wear and tear and sagging.

There are two basic things you can do to make your mattress last longer while guaranteeing it stays comfortable:

  • rotation: rotation involves turning the mattress through 180 degrees, swapping the head with the feet;
  • inversion: this involves turning the mattress over; mattresses that need "flipping" usually have one side labelled "winter".

Now, let's check out how often you should do this, based on your mattress type:

Depending on the type of mattress you have, different rotation techniques will be necessary:

  • spring mattresses: these mattress are typically designed for head-to-foot rotation (180 degrees), which should be done every 3-6 months in order to ensure uniform wear and prevent sagging. For more modern mattresses, a rotation every 6-12 months will be sufficient;
  • memory foam mattresses: these types of mattresses needs to be turned over and rotated every 6-12 months so that the mattress softens uniformly over time and is aired out on both sides;
  • latex mattresses: latex mattresses must be rotated every 3-6 months to avoid flattening; some models will also need to be turned over to air them on both sides - check the manufacturer's instructions.

Thanks to these tips, your mattress will last for longer and continue to give you a good night's sleep!
