Rose water is a natural product known and used for centuries in many beauty rituals: not only does it have an unmistakable and irresistible scent, but also has various beneficial properties to enhance our well-being.

It is an infusion of rose petals, which allows you to exploit the properties of roses - one of the most popular flowers used in the cosmetic industry - for the health and well-being of the body. Some studies indicate that the first use of roses dates back to the seventh century, in Iran. In fact, to this day, this natural product has continued to be one of the most popular traditional remedies for skin health. It is rich in antioxidants, soothes irritation and redness, and also dulls the symptoms of conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and similar ailments.

Read on to find out how to prepare rose water at home:

What you will need:

  • 1 cup of fresh rose petals (which is roughly those from two or three roses). It is advisable to use roses that are edible: many of the best known varieties are, generally Rosa Damascena, Rosa rugosa alba and Rosa gallica. However, make sure they have not been treated with pesticides or other chemicals.
  • a large saucepan or pot
  • a colander
  • glass spray bottle or jar
  • 2 liters of distilled water

How to proceed:

  • Carefully separate all the petals from the flower and wash them gently to remove any traces of dust or dirt.
  • Put the clean petals inside the pan / pot.
  • Add the distilled water without overdoing it: you just have to make sure that the water completely covers the petals, so add the water slowly.
  • Put the pan on a stove, and set the ring to low heat.
  • Cover with a lid and let the mix simmer for half an hour to 45 minutes.
  • When the petals have lost their color you can turn off the stove.
  • Leave the pan to cool.
  • When the infusion is completely cold, take the colander and filter off the liquid by pouring it into a spray bottle or a glass jar.

The rose water thus obtained can be kept in the fridge for a maximum of one month.

You will now have your rose water to use as a face tonic, perfumed body spray, hair perfume (which also apparently controls hair from becoming frizzy) or to use in the bath, perfume to deodorize the home or to spray on fabrics before ironing them, and more!
