Most of us want to decorate our homes during the Christmas holidays and the "centerpiece" of these decorations is usually a festive Christmas tree. But what about decorations for the walls? Garlands, wreaths and strings of fairy lights are common Christmas wall decorations, of course - but how about adding some homemade, Christmas-themed pictures?

You can create these pictures with all sorts of materials and techniques - just take a look at some of the ideas listed below:

1. Picture frames with hanging ornaments

If you have some ornaments you don't want to put on your Christmas tree - for the umpteenth time! - you could consider hanging them inside an empty picture frame using lengths of string, as shown in the example here.

This decoration works well for classic Christmas ball ornaments, but, of course, any ornaments can be used (as seen here). The "trick" is to hang the ornaments from the frame at different heights/lengths to create a harmonious whole.

2. Colored gemstones

Have you ever thought of using colored gemstones to create a Christmas scene in a picture? As you can see, this makes for a very original, striking composition.

3. Semi-precious gemstones and old jewelry

Do you have any broken watches laying around that are not worth repairing? Or perhaps you have some old pieces of jewelry/semi-precious gemstones you no longer wear or use? You could recycle them to create a cute Christmas scene in a picture frame, like the one pictured here.

4. A picture frame made using branches

If you pick up small branches on your walks, they can be used to make wonderful, rustically-styled picture frames. Then, all you need to do is decorate the inside of the frame with leaves, evergreen sprigs, seasonal berries and whatever else strikes your fancy.

You can make a stylized window frame (like the one shown here) using branches and then add some fairy lights and other festive ornaments to make this wonderful decoration "come to life".

5. Drawing on glass

Using suitable markers, you can draw or write whatever you want on a piece of glass in a picture frame: here, a red car in the snow has been drawn on the glass. But, of course, you could also draw/write anything that you like onto the glass - just let your festive creativity flow!

Candles are magical at Christmastime, and you could use electric candles (like the one shown here) to decorate your wall-mounted picture frames.

7. Recycle old window frames

If you have some old, wooden window frames laying around, they could serve as your picture frames. Then, you can have fun decorating them with evergreen sprigs, ribbons, bows, Christmas ornaments and artificial snow.

In this example, a small picture frame has been given a fabric backing (burlap will work well) and a Christmas-themed snow globe has been placed in the center - a stunningly beautiful and unique Christmas decoration for your home!

9. Just like an enchanted forest

A simple picture frame, some twigs to fill it and a cardboard cut-out silhouette of a deer (back-lit with fairly lights): that's all you need to make this eye-catching decoration!

Of course, a Christmas tree is the universal symbol/icon of the festive holidays. You can make stylized Christmas trees using homemade tassels you've crafted from any leftover wool thread you have laying around. These "tassel-trees" are easy to make and look adorable when framed (as shown here)

Happy holidays!
