Markers that can write on glass, washable paint and ornaments of all kinds: at Christmas you can also decorate your windows with products like these, creating something truly magical for the festive season! Check out some of the wonderfully creative ideas listed below:
1. Rows of stylized buildings
Sheryl Winslow (@slow_renovation/Instagram)
A skyline of modern or traditional building: with just a few strokes you can decorate the glass of your windows with a chalkboard or water-based paint that is easy to apply and wash off later.
2. Enchanted forest
Caroline Porter(@carolinescreationsfacepainting/instagram)
There are thousands of seasonly-themed images online that you can copy to paint onto your windows - and you can even use your kids' drawings and/or the images on Christmas greeting cards for inspiration.
In this example, we see an enchanted forest with fir trees, deer and snow being driven by an icy wind!
3. Traditional ornaments
RAZZLE DAZZELLED (@razzledazzelled/Instagram)
Just like the ones you hang on your Christmas tree, the ornaments you see here have been drawn on the window with an erasable, white marker. And they look just like "the real thing", draped across the window's shutters.
4. An opportunity for artists
Cara Hickey Artist (@carahickeyartist(Instagram)
Anyone with a little drawing or painting skills can have fun decorating windows using glass-friendly paints and artificial snow (that can be easily removed from glass). In fact, you can find many "recipes" online for making artificial snow yourself.
5. Colorful drawings!
Sally Marshall (@sallymarshallart/Instagram)
Considering the vast range colorful, glass-friendly paints that are now available, you can really "go wild" with your window art. And you can also get great ideas from checking out how shop windows have been decorated for Christmas (like the one shown here).
6. Glass decals
Sandymount (@grainne.b.e/Instagram)
Of course, you can also get pre-packaged decals for windows from online store or any well-stocked stationery or art supplies shop. Around this time of year, you'll find plenty of traditional, stylized Christmas decals of all kinds. And for those who want to use paints or artificial snow, you can also find seasonally-themed stencils.
7. A window covered in a fantasy

Here's another idea for budding artists: find (or paint!) a decorative pattern that covers the entire window frontage. This can be a "riot" of seasonal fruit and winter leaves (like in the example shown here), or depictions of any other iconic, "Christmassy" images/objects.
8. Favorite Christmas characters
@facemates/Instagram
For many, Santa Claus or The Grinch are iconic, must-have, decorative Christmas characters - but you can paint on any character or design that titillates your Christmas spirit!
9. Penguins? Why not?
Marion Deuchars (@mariondeuchars/Instagram)
Cute penguins (like these here), or maybe reindeer, squirrels, owls, and more... almost any animal you like can become a decorative theme for your windows.
10. Decorate indoors using garlands
@lizzydesigns_/Instagram
And how about decorating your windows from the inside too? In this example, a garland of green sprigs and gold decorations beautifully frames the inside of a kitchen window.
11. Pine cone chains
Alena Ross/Pinterest
In this example, we see a window decoration made using pine cones and string (or wire) hanging from the window's curtain rod: this is a very cute, rustic, all-natural decoration (and will look great displayed throughout the winter too).
12. A branch with wooden decorations
cerulean crabb/Pinterest
Take a sturdy branch and hang decorative, wooden ornaments from it (using wire, string or twine). Then, hang up the branch across the top of a window - it's as simple as that!
13. A little help from plants
Flower Magazine (flowermag.com)
If you have the room to place flowerpots on your windowsills, fill some of them with seasonal plants, moss and flowers (as shown in this example) and put them on your windowsills. Obviously, if you use living plants or bulbs, they will need to get the right amount of sunlight and water. But you can also use dried or artificial materials to avoid this "inconvenience".
