The burners on gas ovens are often neglected when it comes to cleaning the kitchen, especially because it can be challenging to remove dirt, grease and burnt-on residue that gets onto them whilst cooking.

Given this, you'll be glad to know that some all-natural remedies can make this chore a lot easier to do and will return your oven's burners to near-pristine condition!

Below, we you show you how to go about doing this:

Cleaning the burners with citric acid

The best product for cleaning oven burners is undoubtedly citric acid, and is used as follows:

  • place the burners into a pot of water;
  • add 2 tablespoons of citric acid;
  • bring the water to the boil;
  • turn off and allow to stand for 10 minutes (or until the water cools);
  • scrub the burners with a non-abrasive sponge;
  • rinse off and dry.

If you don't have citric acid at home, white vinegar can be a viable substitute:

  • fill a pot with a mixture of water and vinegar in equal parts;
  • immerse the burners in this mixture;
  • bring to the boil and boil for about 5 minutes;
  • turn off and allow to cool;
  • scrub the burners with a non-abrasive sponge or a soft-bristled brush;
  • in case of particularly stubborn grime, add a little dishwashing liquid;
  • rinse off with plenty of water and dry.

Clean the burners with Marseille soap

To remove particularly stubborn grime from your burners, you can use Marseille soap (or an organic dishwashing detergent). The cleaning procedure is as follows:

  • immerse the burners in a solution of hot water and Marseille soap (or the organic dishwashing detergent);
  • allow to soak for at least 30 minutes;
  • scrub the burners with a sponge or a soft toothbrush;
  • rinse off with plenty of water and dry.

Gas oven burners are usually made of a brass or aluminum alloy and can be damaged by overly-aggressive products/cleaning methods. Here's some cleaning methods/products to avoid:

  • washing burners in the dishwasher, as the high alkalinity of the detergents and the salt can be corrosive;
  • prolonged contact with highly acidic substances (like lemon juice);
  • the use of abrasive sponges, steel wool or hard-bristled brushes;
  • using chlorine-based products (such as bleach), if possible.
