If you don't always want to buy and use commercial fabric softener sheets to scent your laundry in the dryer, you can resort to a little DIY using all-natural resources. This will allow you to customize the scent and also to reuse the eco-friendly resources several times over.

The "secret" is to use essential oils. So, let's find out how to do this exactly:

Scraps of fabric: old sheets, clothes and tea towels

Not sure what to do with old sheets, worn-out clothes and even old tea towels? Well, you can cut them up (into the size of a regular fabric softener sheet) and soak these scraps in essential oils. With just 4-5 drops of your favorite essence, you can prep a couple of these DIY dryer sheets for a full load.

Of course, you can always adjust the amount of essential oil and scraps you use - you'll get to know the right combinations/dosage to use over time.

It's easy to soak a cotton wool ball with a few drops of an essential oil, but there's a risk that the cotton will shed and break up as it's spun in the dryer. You can avoid this risk by placing the cotton wool balls in a net bag (like those used for your delicate clothes).

Three cotton balls with three or four drops of essential oil on each should be sufficient to pleasantly scent one load of laundry.

You can also use old towels to scent your laundry in the dryer, so don't throw away any towels you have that have "grayed", frayed or become a little "ragged". Old towels are perfect for cutting up and making DIY dryer sheets, as outlined above.

If, however, you don't want to cut up your old towels, you can also just leave them intact. Take an old towel and put 10 drops of an essential oil on it and give it a try. Depending on the outcome, you can adjust the dosage until you get the results you want. You can also moisten the towel first with a cup of water, wringing it out thoroughly before adding the essential oil. This moisture will generate scented steam which will perfume your laundry as it dries.

Dryer balls - usually made of wool - are used to reduce static electricity that builds up in a dryer, but they are also ideal for scenting your laundry if you put a few drops of essential oil on them. Dryer balls can be reused many times and are an very eco-friendly product.

A little experimentation and you'll soon find your favorite method for scenting your laundry in the dryer!
