DIY lemon essential oil: make it a home to ensure you always have some readily to hand

Obtained by cold-pressing the peels of lemons, lemon essential oil is a highly versatile and very popular product.

Did you know that you can make your own lemon essential oil quite simply at home? The recipe is very easy to follow and does not require the use of any special utensils or resources. Check out the guide on how to do this below:

Ingredients and utensils needed

To make your own, DIY lemon essential oil, you will only need 3 basic ingredients:

  • untreated organic lemons: it is important that the lemons are ones that have edible peels from which the oil will be extracted;
  • extra virgin olive oil, preferably an organic brand;
  • sweet almond oil.

In addition to these all-natural ingredients, you will need a sterilized glass jar with an airtight seal.

Preparing the lemons

Once you have the necessary ingredients, proceed with the preparation of the lemons:

  • wash the lemons thoroughly, removing any labels, label glue and other impurities;
  • peel the lemons, making sure to leave the piths intact;
  • dry the peels for 2 days near a heat source or in the oven at 40 degrees C (for 4 to 6 hours).

Preparing the essential oil

Once the peels are dried, you can proceed to make your DIY essential oil;

  • place the lemon peels in a large, glass jar;
  • cover the peels with a mixture of extra virgin olive oil and almond oil in equal parts;
  • press down on the peels to help squeeze out their essence into the oil;
  • close the jar and place in a cool place, away from light;
  • allow to stand for 30 days, ensuring you agitate the jar every 2/3 days to facilitate mixing;
  • after 30 days, open the jar, filter and squeeze the peels again before putting them back in the oil to steep;
  • leave for another 15 days, agitating the jar every 2/3 days;
  • after the 15 days, filter the mixture, and you're done!

In just 45 days, you will have your own all-natural, organic lemon essential oil!

So, now you've made it, how does one use lemon essential oil? Perfect for replacing chemical air fresheners, essential lemon oil is very versatile and can be used in a number of different ways:

  • add it to your DIY detergents you use to clean your house - not only will it leave a pleasant scent, but it will also help sanitize surfaces with its antiseptic action;
  • it's also useful for treating skin infections such as acne and cold sores - just apply a few drops on a cotton pad and dab the affected areas;
  • add it to a neutral shampoo - the oil will help keep your hair healthy and less greasy;
  • it's perfect for use with toning massages;
  • finally, lemon essential oil can be used in recipes to flavor dishes and take advantage of its beneficial health properties.
