Decorating the home and/or their classrooms is an activity that your kids can get involved in and have fun with, thanks to the many creative projects that they can undertake during autumn. Seasonal decorations, in particular, can help kids get in touch with nature, discovering its rhythms and learning to respect its cycles.

There are many projects that you can do with your kids during autumn, using all-natural resources such as pumpkins, acorns, chestnuts and colorful leaves. Below, we list some fun, creative projects to make autumnal decorations with your kids.

A very simple project, is to make small, pom-pom animals using cardboard and wool.

Get some cardboard, a ball of wool, some small, woolen pom-poms and googly, stick-on eyes to glue and you're ready to go:

  • First of all, cut out the shape of the animal you've chose from the cardboard;
  • Wrap the wool thread around your fingers and cut the ends to form a big pom-pom;
  • Tie this pom-pom to the cardboard, which becomes the animal's fur;
  • Use the small pom-poms for noses and stick on the googly eyes;
  • Now, your little pom-pom animal is ready!

Whatever the season, children love to run around outside. So, why not take advantage of this to get them to collect bunches of colorful, autumnal leaves?

When you get back home, you can use these leaves to make cute, autumn lanterns:

  • Place the leaves on the shiny side of a sheet of waxed paper (parchment paper is perfect);
  • Cover the leaves with another sheet of parchment paper, with the shiny side facing downward;
  • Iron the sheets to get them to stick together;
  • Use scotch tape to form a cylinder with the sheets;
  • Place your parchment paper cylinders over small, battery-powered fairly lights and switch on (don't use real candles or expose to naked flame).

Now, your home will be illuminated by these cute lanterns, setting the perfect autumnal atmosphere!

Dip the flat side of the apple half in orange, acrylic paint and the kids can use this as a "pumpkin stamp". They can then complete their "masterpieces" by drawing on additional details - like the stalks - using markers.
