Modern washing machines are super-sophisticated and have programs for any wash, even of items that go far beyond the classic laundry of clothing and household linens. And there are also alternative uses of the appliance to wash categories of things that it would not occur to you to clean like this. What, then, are the items we should never put in the washing machine?

Delicate fabrics: some cannot go in the washing machine

The golden rule, before sticking anything in the washing machine, is always to carefully read the washing instructions for that garment or item. Sometimes, however, we don't think about it and end up making distracting mistakes that can cost us a lot. So here is a series of delicate fabrics and materials that our clothes or accessories may be made of that should set off alarm bells, even when they are just inserts and do not make up the main material from which the item is made, and even if the item itself (shoes, skirts, bags) falls into a category that could usually be washed in the washing machine.

  • Leather and synthetic leather
  • Leather
  • Suede
  • Fur, including synthetic fur
  • Tulle
  • Silk-although in this case there are washing machines with a special program, so you can give it a try.

In addition to the more delicate fabrics that we can intuitively see how they are not suitable for going into the washing machine, there are other materials and decorations to watch out for: if our shirt, dress, or accessory has them, it is best to hand wash.

  • Sequins, rhinestones and beads: they come off easily, even if we always used the most delicate settings. Best to do it by hand carefully and without high temperatures that would cause glues and colored patinas to peel off.
  • Swimsuits: even the delicates program can be a bit too demanding. And may therefore ruin them before their time.
  • Baseball caps: even for them, hand washing is always recommended, with some additive if we need to get rid of sweat.
  • Objects covered with animal fur: before putting mats, sheets, slipcovers or clothes themselves that are full of hair into the washing machine, they should always be removed as much as possible by hand or with useful tools.
  • Fabrics with stains consisting la flammable liquids: if a garment had become soiled with diesel fuel, solvents, cooking oil or other flammable or explosive substances, it could then give off vapors that could ignite or explode, as some appliance manufacturers also warn.

If we avoid having the washing machine wash these things, it will certainly last longer itself!
