Tidying up and neatly organizing a home can be challenging. And for those who love a vintage, rustic and/or shabby-chic decor or style, it can be especially difficult to do this whilst "remaining in theme". So, this is where a bit of DIY comes in: check out the ideas below that will allow you to make handy storage items to organize your home better - and still remain true to your beloved shabby-chic decor.

1. Rustic noticeboard

A beautiful, wooden frame (which can be deliberately weathered or "stressed") with some chicken wire is all you need to create this wonderful, rustic, farmhouse-styled noticeboard.

2. Metal basket stands

Stands like the one shown here, can be useful all around the home! Metal, mesh basket stands (perhaps painted white), can be handy in the bathroom to store towels, bars of soap and other bathroom goodies, for example! But stands like this will certainly be very handy when placed in the other rooms of the home too.

3. Wide, mesh, metal basket

Do you have a single, old, rusted metal basket laying around? Well don't throw it away! You can paint it, and/or decorate it with lace or some floral applique, for example. Shown here, is a shabby-chic styled basket for storing books and magazines neatly.

4. Glass jars: a great resource

Glass jars are great for storing all sorts of things and are iconic of the shabby-chic style: you can paint the lids, cover their sides with fabric, burlap, lace, and more!

5. Glass jar pen holders

No lids needed for these jars: just a coat of paint and some twine glued the necks to decorate them. In a jiffy, you now have some shabby-chic styled pen/pencil holders!

6. Tin can desk organizers

Much the same idea, but this time using tin cans (and perhaps for holding heavier items). Tin cans can be easily decorated using "old-world" themed decoupage for lovers of the shabby-chic style.

7. Knitting needles and crochet hooks organized in shabby-chic jars

Fabric, a burlap label, twine and some lace: that's all you need to "dress up" some humble glass jars and turn them into shabby-chic holders for your knitting needles and crochet hooks, for example.

8. A knitting tub

An old metal/tin tub and some paint or decorative paper is all you need to make this beautiful container for you knitting equipment (but which could also be used to neatly store away blankets, books, magazines, and more)!

9. A twine dispenser

Twine is also iconic for shabby-chic styled crafts, but this cordage is also used very often in the kitchen, to tie up parcels and packages, to tie back plants, and more. Given this, why not make a few cute, shabby-chic twine dispensers (like the one shown here)?

10. Charming storage boxes

Rather than just tossed onto a shelf, how about keeping your various knick-knacks in cardboard boxes (a shoe box or an old gift box, for example): all you need to do is cover these boxes in decorative paper or fabrics in the shabby-chic style.

11. Even outdoor vases can be made to match the shabby-chic decor

Here's another iconic shabby-chic decoration: lace! How about using grandma's old doilies to decorate your outdoor flower pots?! Check out the beautiful example shown here for some inspiration!
