Light-colored walls help rooms look brighter, larger and more spacious, but they have the drawback of getting dirty extremely easily and looking "tatty" over time. But to have clean walls again, you don't need to call in the painters.

So, how can you remove stains from light-colored walls without repainting or damaging the existing coats of paint? Check out this short guide:

The first thing to do, is to carefully dust the surface of the wall using a duster, a microfibre cloth or a vacuum cleaner. Proceed systematically from top to bottom, being careful not to damage the walls by using too much force.

Then, proceed as follows:

  • A cloth moistened with water and a little Marseille soap (or some other delicate detergent) will be sufficient to rub stains off any type of wall. Use circular rubbing movements and ensure the cloth is damp and not dripping wet (which could damage the paint);
  • If the stains are particularly stubborn, you can try removing them using a mixture of water and baking soda (which has great cleaning and whitening properties);
  • For white walls, a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide can also be used (and will also remove mold);
  • Finally, if the paint is peeling on the wall, avoid using water to remove any stains (which could damage the paint even more); rather, remove the peeling paint and use "touching-up paint" on the affected area.

Once you have chosen the solution best suited to your needs (see above), carefully follow the steps below to clean your walls:

  • start by making sure you protect the floor from any drips by covering it with paper or towels;
  • carefully dust the walls (as described above);
  • prepare the chosen cleaning solution resources (see above);
  • dip a soft cloth in the cleaning solution and wring it out thoroughly (it must be damp, not dripping wet);
  • try out solution on a hidden part of the wall first to make sure it works without causing damage;
  • proceed to clean the stains from the wall, starting from the top and proceeding downwards using circular movements (and not applying too much force);
  • wipe down the wall with a damp clean cloth to finish the cleaning process;
  • pass a dry cloth over the entire surface and ventilate the room to speed up drying time.

Thanks to this method, you can easily remove stains from your walls without damaging the surface paint!
