Use lighting to make your home truly unique: check out these 14 examples
The style of a home does not come just from the furniture used. Certainly important, furniture, paint colors selected, fabrics used, artwork on display, and more, are all decor items that help define the style/"look" of a home. But a home's decor cannot be considered as complete if the issue of lighting has not be addressed. Natural light aside, how we decide to artificially illuminate our homes is a crucial decor decision to be considered. Read on to find out more:
1. Impressive chandelier
Choosing lighting systems for your rooms means thinking about how the room will be used - for work, fun or rest, for example. Once this purpose has been determined, you can move on to the type of lighting needed. For example, if you want the living room to feel more elegant, you can choose a large chandelier (perhaps with an unconventional shape). The position of the individual bulbs will create a wonderful light source as they direct the light around the room.
2. A classic touch
If you prefer something a little more "vintage", you can use standing lamps for light (rather than ceiling fixtures). Candles also play a fundamental role to create this "old worldly" look, providing warmth and inducing an intimate atmosphere.
3. LED strip lighting
If you prefer something more modern, you can choose to illuminate your rooms with LED strip lighting. The light will "magically" appear from the walls, providing a breath-taking effect.
4. "Film star" lighting
Do you want something truly eye-catching? A dressing table complete with a mirror surrounded by light bulbs can be placed in the bedroom - or anywhere else, for that matter - and will be a stunning focal point. The framework of exposed light bulbs will give a retro, Hollywood film-star effect to the room.
5. Ethnic lighting
Are ethnic themes your thing? Well, a Moroccan-styled chandelier is just what you need. The dense patterning of the chandelier will let the light shine through, throwing magnificent patterns over the room's surfaces. This is certainly not a choice to make for your home office, but it could be perfect for the living room, for example.
6. Surrounded by nature
Being in tune with nature also means choosing materials inspired by it to furnish your home. And lighting plays an important role when it comes to achieving this. In the pictured example, the subtle lighting aids relaxation and highlights the contours of the fixtures and furnishings.
7. Soft light
Soft lights are a very popular choice. Multiple "soft bulbs" are grouped together, perhaps at different heights and with shades made of transparent glass - as pictured in this exquisite example.
8. Bring in the night sky
Bring the night sky into your home: in this example, the "celestial vault" is formed thanks to the skilful layout of lighting in the ceiling. The multiple bright points create the sensation of one being under a starry sky.
9. Vintage light source
If you love the vintage style, a light fitting like the one pictured here cannot be missing: a lamp with a "dome" lampshade and a tubular frame is perfect for giving a vintage feel. Placed in a corner - away from other "detractors" - this light source will be a true focal point.
10. Designer floor lamps
A tall, designer floor lamp like the one pictured here will radiate light throughout the room, while remaining standing proundly in its designated spot. A very original idea, don't you think?
11. A "splendor" of light
Crystals, hanging pendants and faceted light: if this is the effect you want, then check out the "ostentatious" light fitting pictured here. This example gives you a good idea of what can be achieved. This light fitting is mounted in ceiling in the center of the room, above the table and dominates the room with its grandeur.
12. Lighting only from the ceiling
If you like the industrial style - with its soft lights, refined angles and matching colors - how can this be realized? Well, you can fill up the ceiling with light fittings, as shown in the above photo. Certainly, an unconventional, yet stunning, way to illuminate any room.
13. Just two wall sconces to change the atmosphere
And don't forget how important and stylish wall sconces can be (aka "up/down-lighters"). Scones come in many types, colors, shapes and sizes and they are ideal if you want directed lighting (up, down or focused) - it all depends on the effect you want to create. But there is no question that wall sconces can create a warm, embracing atmosphere.
14. Floor lamps
Finally, there are floor lamps with their long "necks" which can be used to direct their light on a specific spot or area. Floor lamps are ideal in a living room where you want to have a reading corner, or delineate a "chatting corner".
The lighting and lighting systems you select will be key in setting the "tone" of your home. As such, you need to ensure that your choices are in line with your needs, preferences and tastes.
We hope this list of 14 examples will point you in the right - illuminated! - direction.
