Electric blankets: how best to wash them and how often?
Heated blankets, aka electrical blankets, are powered by electricity are very popular these days. And what's better than wrapping up in a warm blanket on a miserable, cold day?
But, like all blankets, electric blankets also need to be washed to be kept hygienic. The question is: how to do this without causing any damage?
How does an electric blanket work?
Electric blankets have a system of wires inside them that allow for the passage of energy and the generation of heat. These wires are small and delicate and must be treated gently and carefully.
Electric blankets are not high power consumers and are also relatively cheap to buy. Typically, electric blankets are turned on 15 to 20 minutes before the user goes to bed.
But given that these blankets have electrical components, can they be cleaned and washed? The answer is yes, but with care.

There is no set "rule" about how often an electric blanket must be washed - the more it's used, the more frequently it must be washed.
It is vital to always carefully read the instructions provided by the manufacturer first. All electric blankets come with washing instructions attached, and these instructions must be followed to the letter.
Whether washing by hand or using the washing machine, the first thing to do is turn off the power and remove the power cable, if possible. Many of these blankets have a detachable cable that facilitate their washing and drying.
Procedure
Electric Blanket Washing Procedure:
- If you machine-wash your blanket, make sure to remove the cable, put the blanket in the drum (ideally by itself), and choose a short wash program. Although they can come into contact with water, it is best for them to be exposed to moisture for prolonged periods. Most blankets do not get very dirty and do not need to be put on long wash cycles. The same applies to the spin cycle: put on short, gentle-mode spin cycle. When choosing a detergent, use one for delicate garments.
- If hand washing, remove the power cord and immerse the blanket in plenty of soapy water and leave to soak for a few minutes. Once done, clean the blanket by rubbing the dirtiest parts, and then rinse out. Do not wring out the blanket by hand - let it drip-dry in the sun, if possible.
Again, the most important thing to do is to ensure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for washing the blanket. Once you are done with an electrical blanket, store it in a humidity free environment.
