You spend up to a quarter of your day in bed, so it's important that your bed linen is kept as clean and as hygienic as possible at all times.

Given this, it is vital that you use the right products and techniques to wash and clean your bed line on a regular basis.

In this article, we explain how best to wash and clean a key component of your bed linen: the pillowcases.

The pillowcase is in contact with your face throughout the night and, due to this fact, needs to be hygenically clean. Over time, the pillowcase accumulates dead skin cells due to the natural exfoliation process of your skin. Additionally, the oils your body produces, and residue of beauty products you use, also get "soaked up" by pillowcases.

Neglecting to change pillowcases could cause bateria to proliferate and have a negative impact on your skin (achne, rashes, blackheads, etc). This "bad habit" will also cause your pillowcases to turn yellow and reduce their functional lifespan.

How often you should wash your pillowcases depends on several factors, such as your lifestyle, your sleeping habits, but also your overall health and the climatic conditions in the area where you live. Obviously, if your pets sleep with you, if you usually eat in bed, or you sweat a lot or live in a place where the climate is very hot or humid, you will need to change your pillowcases more frequently. And, of course, wash your pillowcases even more frequently if you are ill or convalescing.

Normally, you should wash your pillowcases once every two weeks, but preferably once a week if you meet any of the conditions described above. Use a delicate and eco-friendly laundry detergent and an anti-mite vacuum cleaner (if you have one).

Also remember to wash the pillow itself: typically, this should be done at least once or twice a year; if your pillow is not washable, it will need to be replaced (with the same frequency).
