Make-up stains on your clothes or other fabrics? Remove them with these remedies
We've all stained our clothes or upholstery with make-up: an accidental spill of, for example, nail polish can be a real disaster. For those new to this "inconvenience", cleaning up make-up stains can seem challenging, if not impossible.
Make-up is an oil-based product designed to endure and therefore cannot be easily removed using water alone: it is necessary to use stain-removing cleaners/products. So how exactly can you remove make-up stains from fabrics? There are several methods you can use and we detail these below:
Remove make-up from clothes
To remove makeup from your clothes, start by removing the excess, then pre-treat the garment with a stain remover. Alternatively, you can use a few drops of eco-friendly dishwashing detergent or create a paste with powdered detergent and a little water. In the case of nail polish spills, dab the stain with acetone (after testing on a hidden spot first).
Leave the stain remover to act for about 15 minutes, then scrub it with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse out with hot water and put on a regular machine wash, checking the garment before drying. If a stain remains, apply a solution of mild bleach and cold water to the stain, leaving act until the stain has faded.
Remove make-up stains from carpets and upholstery
To remove make-up stains from carpets and upholstery, start by removing any excess with a blunt knife, and without rubbing (which will work the make-up deeper into the fibers). Get a carpet-cleaning product or, alternatively, prepare a solution with cold water and dishwashing detergent,. Then, dip a clean white cloth into this solution and dab the stain - start at the edges and work towards the center, transferring the make-up to the cloth. Dab with a clean, dry cloth and leave to dry. Finish off by vacuuming and restoring the pile.
Alternatively, you can use facial make-up remover to the stain by dabbing it with a cotton ball before proceeding with a regular wash. And if your garment cannot be washed, take it to your local drycleaner.
Give these cleaning methods a go next time you get make-up on your garments and fabrics.
