Mold in the bathroom? Prevent this happening by using these easy hacks

The warm and humid environment of your bathroom is perfect to encourage the growth of mold - which, in turn, could be bad for your health. To avoid this situation, it is necessary to act promptly to eliminate any mold which starts to appear.

The main cause of the development of mold in our bathroom is showering, a (usually) daily habit that puts a lot of water vapor (steam) into the bathroom's environment, making it very humid.

However, there are some steps that you can take after every shower to reduce this inconvenience and we list these below:

Cleaning of surfaces

Make a DIY anti-mold mixture to use after every shower: mix one part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts demineralized water in a spray bottle and spray it over all the surfaces of your shower when you are finished using it. Leave this to act for a few minutes before rinsing away with plenty of warm water. Always keep the mixture handy in your shower so it is always ready for use.

Another important habit to get into, is to completely dry all the surfaces of your shower after use: use a squeegee to scrape down the glass, mirrors and tiles and wipe all the surfaces with a clean, dry cloth (also remembering the floor). Also, dry carpets, towels and bathrobes, preferably in the open air.

Another measure that you should take when you shower, is to ventilate the bathroom by opening the windows (even in winter) or by turning on a fan heater. With a heater, turn this on half an hour before taking your shower to remove any residual humidity from the air, and leave it on for half an hour after taking your shower (set the timer, if your model has one).

Finally, consider using a dehumidifier, especially if your bathroom has no windows, to remove excess humidity. You can also make DIY dehumidifiers by placing bowls with rock salt in the corners of your bathroom to absorb any excess humidity generated by the shower. Check the tray of your dehumidifier regularly to ensure that it performs efficiently. If you go for the rock salt solution, replace the salt every 2-3 days.

Adopt these habits after every shower and mold will not "rear it's ugly head" in your bathroom.
