A vertical garden in a corner of the house: an idea for cheaply decorating with a plant feature
It is common knowledge that the presence of plants in our homes contributes to our psychophysical well-being, as well as being decorative. According to Feng Shui, for example, a house is not fully furnished until it has plants in the rooms.
It is also true, however, that pot plants need space, and the right light and humidity conditions (amongst other things) to thrive. So, how best to set up areas in the home for plants? There are several ways to do this and these are detailed below:
Brilliant ideas found online
An economical and intelligent idea comes from online content-creator Samantha Hermann (@houseplusplant). It is a very low-cost DIY project andallows you to create a vertical garden in the corner of a room.
If we imagine a vertical garden, we know that it will need supports capable of holding plants - but how easy is it to find a support structure like this? Well, you may have to comb through countless catalogues to find what you need. Alternatively, you can take a "novel" approach to the issue...
This is what Samantha did, and shared her innovation online and on YouTube.
As she explains, this involves adding lights for indoor cultivation (disc-shaped spotlights, in this case) to the corner shelving structure for a shower cubicle. The result is a DIY invention that is "completely portable, and you can customize the size and number of shelves".
Samantha highlighted the other advantages: "It is perfect for those who rent, or anyone who wants to avoid putting holes in the walls [...]. It has compact dimensions that can adapt to any space, and can even work in rooms with low ceilings!". And you can do the same: just find a sufficiently sturdy corner shelving unit for a shower, matching lights, and you're ready to start your vertical garden project! IKEA plant holders to try out at home
If your home gets lots of natural light, then you could consider decorating the interior with hanging vases, or arranging the plants on other suitable supports. IKEA's selection of planters and pot holders can prove useful here.
In fact, there are supports like those of the CHILISTRÅN line that can be adapted to many different types of homes. This way, you can find room for climbing plants, whose foliage can droop down, looking spectacular...
And you could also try using a trolley/caddy like the one shown here: the stands allow you to arrange the pots at various heights, but all on a single structure which is easy to move when needed (to clean around, to place in better light, or to change look in a room quickly, for example).
In short, with accessories like these, it becomes very easy to create green corners in your home!
