We rarely think about cleaning our cleaning tools and utensils. In fact, a dirty tool will only end up moving the dirt around and not eliminate it.

The gradual accumulation of dirt in/on cleaning tools often leads to them wearing out quicker and becoming malodorous. But this can be easily avoided by adopting a proper monthly cleaning routine. An important first step is to dry your cleaning tools thoroughly after each use: the presence of humidity encourages the growth of mold and bacteria.

So, how are cleaning tools cleaned properly? Well, keep reading for some useful tips:

Removable or non-removable brush/mop heads

Removable brush/mop heads are usually made of cotton, fabric or sponge fibers and can easily be washed on a hot cycle in the washing machine. Use a degreasing detergent and add 100ml of mild bleach.

If the head is not removable, rinse it thoroughly in hot water after use and soak it in a bucket with water and bleach. Leave to soak for about 10 minutes, then air dry.

Sponges and brushes easily pick up germs and bacteria - especially when used in the kitchen. To clean these items, rinse them carefully with hot water after use, leaving them to dry in a vertical position.

Once a week, you should sanitize these tools. The sponges can be washed in the dishwasher at high temperature. Alternatively, you can also soak them in a solution of hot water and bleach for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and leave them to air dry. This second method is also suitable for brushes with plastic handles, which could be warped by the high temperatures of the dishwasher.

Throw away any sponges when they start to smell bad and brushes when the bristles flatten or wear out.

Microfiber cloths can be washed at 40 degrees C in the washing machine. To ensure proper cleaning, you should avoid using fabric softeners and dryer sheets which can damage the cloths' electrostatic capacities. As an alternative to using the washing machine, you can soak your microfiber cloths in a solution of warm water and white vinegar.

Brooms

Brooms must also be cleaned periodically: after use, take the broom outside and clear the bristles by rubbing them over a step or railing; periodically carry out a deeper cleaning by immersing the broom in a solution of warm water and a little dishwashing liquid. After 10 minutes, rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry.

When was the last time you cleaned your cleaning tools?
