10 essential items you must have in your bedroom

Central to our continued well-being, the bedroom is deserving of some special care and attention in all areas. This includes the choices we make in terms of its essential furnishing and fittings. The bedroom needs to fit our needs, so let's explore some ideas in this theme:

Here, we are not talking about getting a bed that has been completely custom-built. Rather, this is about the choice of the type of bedframe that meets our needs.

If you have loads of space for a "grand" bed, great! But if space is tight, consider getting a storage bed (ie. beds with storage compartments underneath them). Some models even come with headboards that have shelves built in.

Mattresses and pillows

If possible, invest in buying high-end mattresses and pillows that will facilitate the best quality sleep possible. There are different production technologies and materials for these items: traditional materials, memory foam, latex, natural fibers or even some combination of these materials. Decide which one is best suited to you: for example, a spring mattress may seem old-fashioned, but it could be better for those who are heavy and sweat a lot; latex is good for those who move a lot while they sleep, and so on.

The same goes for pillows, coming in many shapes, sizes and fillings. Your sleeping habits, as well as your physical characteristics (eg. a long or short neck) and even any pathologies (backs, above all) should guide you in choosing the bedding that best suits your needs. And all this attention to detail will pay off in the long run.

We need to change sheets often, and these too must be chosen based on specific criteria, starting the season! There are finer types of cotton sheets that will never steer you wrong. But linen or bamboo fiber sheets are also a great choice you can consider.

Quilts, duvets and throws

Do you use a quilt or throw placed on top of the bed? Or do you prefer a duvet in a duvet cover? In reality, this choice is more about aethetics. Nowadays, in fact, there are duvet covers that fulfil all of these functions and look great too.

That said, you should have a duvet type that suits the season: a thick duvet for colder times, a thinner one for when tempertures rise.

Extra pillows

Adding extra pillows to a bed is a much-debated issue: they are nice to look at, for sure, but they have to be removed every evening and put back the next morning. So, this is an extra chore which some may choose to forego. But if you spend a lot of time in bed - not necessarily just sleeping - you may want some extra pillows to prop yourself up with.

More important, however, is how comfortable the pillows are: usually those that are too small will not be comfortable; larger pillows can give you the back support you need to relax properly.

Considering that clothes are usually also kept in the bedroom, having a mirror in the room for "outfit/make-up checks" every morning is a very handy addition!

Occasional bedside table

Once you have chosen you bed type, a bedside table will be the ideal complement: in addition to the style and materials its made of, you need to pay attention to its size. The shelf should be at the same height as the top of the mattress, making it easy to reach - even when you're half-asleep! And then, all the extra storage space a bedside table brings will not go to waste.

Most people need complete darkness to sleep well in, and curtains that provide this. To this end, you can consider putting up blackout curtains (which can also help you reduce heating costs if they also have heat insulating properties!).
