Electric water heaters: how to use them correctly to save money

The water heater is must-have appliance at home, without which, we wouldn't be able to enjoy the pleasures of having hot water.

There are two types of water heater: electric and gas. Today, we focus on the electrical models and explore ways to reduce our power bills.

Electrical water heaters are not all the same - there are different types, which we list below:

  • Storage water heater: for this type, there is a tank where the water is stored and is kept at a temperature of between 30 and 60 degrees C. The moment you open the tap, hot water will be almost instantly available. Of course, this type of water heater constantly consumes energy to keep the water at a constant temperature (set by the thermostat).
  • Instantaneous water heater: there is no tank for this type of heater, as the water is only heated when the hot water tap is opened. In this case, there is a very high peak in energy consumption when water is used; when hot water is not being run, energy consumption is zero.
  • Heat pump water heater: this is a new, modern model of water heater that transfers ambient heat to heat the water. By all accounts, this is a very efficient model.

The answer to this question depends on how much (hot) water you usually use. For large families who need hot water several times a day, a storage water heater is probably the best choice. This will avoid you having multiple power consumption peaks throughout the day.

However, for single people or couples, the best choice is an instantaneous water heater as hot water consumption is likely to be low and there is no need for hot water storage to service a large requirement.

Heat pump water heaters appear to be able to save up to 75% on energy consumption, and look destined to be the go-to model for the future. They are certainly more eco-friendly and appear to be able to help reduce energy costs.

To use a water heater in the most efficient way possible, it is important to choose a model suitable for the size of the family, to thermally insulate it, use hot water only when strictly necessary, and make sure that the appliance is well-maintained.

The most important thing is to choose the model that best suits your needs and to set the theromstat correctly: 60 degrees C in winter and 40 degrees C in summer are the recommended settings.

It is best to turn the water heater off when you are away from home for long periods, such as when on holiday.

By following these simple tips, it will be possible to save on your energy bills but still be able to enjoy a nice, hot shower.
