The choice of flooring is fundamental when furnishing a home, since the floor-furniture combination will determine the overall ambience of a home. Considering the vast range of materials, colors and types of flooring available these days, it's easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing.

Before making a choice, carefully evaluate your needs: for example, do you want to make your kitchen more stylish and welcoming? Or do you need to make a small, dark kitchen look larger and brighter? It is necessary to keep these factors and needs (and others) in mind when making a choice.

Below, we suggest some advice for when it comes to choosing flooring for the kitchen:

To bring balance to your kitchen, choose contrasting colors for the floor and furniture. Select a natural light wood or bamboo floor combined with dark-colored furniture, or vice versa. This choice works well for both kitchens with wood furniture, but also for more modern settings that mix different materials such as glass or metal.

A combination of dark furniture and flooring in the same shades may seem risky. But if you choose dark woods such as oak, birch, oak or walnut in combination with lighter colored/painted walls and ceilings, it will be easier for you to bring out the highlights. You can combine these floors with furniture in the same shade or darker -  and perhaps with a glossy finish that further highlights them.

Grey

Grey is a neutral color and perfect for use in any kitchen. Use lighter shades if the furniture is dark, which will highlight the pieces and help to brighten the kitchen. Alternatively, light-colored furniture a dark gray floor can help you add depth. This color goes really well with an industrial-styled decor and open-planned kitchens.

White

White is a "daring" color to choose for a kitchen, given how easily it can get dirty. However, white can be perfect for brightening up a dark kitchen and to highlight dark furniture. When used in combination with furniture in off-white hues, you can make a small kitchen appear to be larger. In this case, use different shades for, for example, the countertops.
