Not sure what colors to use in your kitchen? Check out these examples for some inspiration

For years, white was the dominant color used in kitchens all over the world, especially if furnished in modern decor. Then,  pastel shades, inspired by nature (like sage green, for example), came into vogue. And on the heels of this trend, the use of bolder colors started to catch on, and remains popular today.

This new trend could also be suitable for the renovation of your kitchen - let's look at some examples:

Red in the kitchen

One of the colors most avoided in interior design is red. Red can be overwhelming and also get boring quite quickly.

But this doesn't mean that bright, "traffic sign" red is the only red available for use. There are many other decidedly softer and more enveloping shades of red you can consider using: red with purple or blue undertones, for example.

The kitchen company, deVOL, together with designer, UNs Hobbs, have demonstrated how even a dark and intense red can be used to elegantly decorate a kitchen. They selected a red called "Refectory Red", which is shown in this photo. Very elegant, no?

Another way to tone down bright red is to use it in its more natural tones. What do you think of the mellow brick red of these kitchen cabinets? This hue is warm, vibrant, and definitely "sunny". Check out how well this tone of red suits the white kitchen in this photo.

Purple or lilac kitchens

Purple is considered the color of mystery, magic and the dramatic. Purple is rarely used for furnishings, because it requires a lot of skill to harmonize with the surroundings. Also when choosing a bold color like purple, you must always consider how they show up in natural and artificial light. And, of course, there is always a risk that purple will feel overwhelming.

But, as you can see in this photo, purple can look very sophisticated, especially when combined with the white background and light wood of the wall units!

For those who want to use a "softer" type of purple, lilac could be an excellent choice. Look at how nice lilac is in this example, with the white marble backsplash and the brass handles and taps. Like something out of a fairy tale!

Yellow in the kitchen to ward off sadness

Yellow immediately creates a sunny, cheerful atmosphere, which wards off sadness... unless you get the shade wrong, of course. However, if your kitchen already has some grey in it - whether light or dark - yellow could be the way to go to liven everything up!

And if the idea of making yellow the predominant color in your kitchen is not for you, you can use it for just some set pieces in the location. The example here - a yellow open-faced cabinet - shows how striking this technique can be!

A touch of romantic pink

Here, a powdered pink with a satin finish makes the kitchen look and feel very romantic and soft. The white on the wall (also with a very light touch of pink) is a fetching background - topped off with white ceramics, light natural wood and copper fixtures and fittings.

In a bright kitchen like the one shown here, you can also use a bolder tone of pink, combined with a low backsplash in the style of Venetian flooring!
