For interior decorating projects, choosing the right curtains for your windows is of fundamental importance. And the decision about how long the curtains should be will impact the final appearance of your rooms. In this regard, there are numerous factors to take into consideration: the height of the ceilings and windows, the main function you plan for your curtains, the structural and architectural elements in the rooms, and more.

A curtain of the incorrect length could spoil the final look of a room and you certainly don't want this to happen. Also remember that the curtain model and fabric it is made of will also have a strong visual impact. So how do you choose the right curtains for each room in your home? Well, check out this expert advice:

To determine the optimum length for your curtains, get a tape measure and take the measurement from the floor to the point where the rod is positioned. Usually, this will be 10 centimeters above the window, but if it is higher, the room will seem more spacious and brighter.

Another factor to take into account is the distance to leave between the bottom of the curtain and the floor:

  • A curtain that "flows out" onto the floor for at least 4 centimeters will create a soft and romantic feel, but will lose a lot of practicality (as it wil get dirty quickly and frequently);
  • A curtain that just touches the floor is the most common arrangement found in homes, and especially in living rooms;
  • A windowsill curtain is the best choice for kitchens and bathrooms, where the window is usually raised above the floor and a more practical solution is required;
  • Finally, curtains that extend 10 centimeters past the windowsill are ideal for environments in which the radiator is positioned just below the window.

Width and fabric are equally important

Once the curtain length has been worked out, it is necessary to determine the most appropriate widths, usually calculated by multiplying the width of the window by between 1.5 to 3 times. The correct width is crucial to ensure that the curtains look right in the room.

Finally, the choice of curtain fabric must also be taken into account: one type of fabric may be more suitable than others, for example:

  • Velvet is ideal for serving as blackout curtains, and also help ward off heat and cold;
  • Cotton is perfect for any furnishing style, very easy to clean and allows light to filter through it;
  • Linen, like cotton, allows light to filter through, but is more challenging to maintain;
  • Finally, polyester is the most economical, durable and easy-to-maintain material for curtains.
