The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is a very popular plant, especially during the winter when it starts to bloom in November (and explaining how it got its name). Robust and easy to grow, the Christmas cactus has no special needs and is is suitable for beginner, inexperienced gardeners.

Despite being a succulent, the Christmas cactus requires a fair amount of water to thrive. Recently, however, a the habit of watering this cactus with a solution of water and sugar (sugar water) has become increasingly widespread. According to advocates of this practice, sugar provides nourishment to the plant, enhancing its vitality.

The truth is that a sugar water solution is not suitable for the Christmas cactus. Sugar is a vital source of energy for plants, but its artificial administration is only beneficial for some plants, such as those suffering some form of stress; in these cases, sugar water administrations can aid the recovery of the plant.

The Christmas catus, however, may start to struggle in the presence of sugar in the soil, as this additive can inhibit its ability to absorb moisture and nutrients. Furthermore, the presence of sugar could encourage bacteria, mold and other parasites to proliferate, which, in turn, could be harmful to the plant.

So how can we ensure our Christmas cactus produces abundant, beautiful flowers?

There are several reasons why the Christmas cactus will not bloom:

  • Excess water: this plant must be watered regularly, but only small amounts and only during the evening hours to avoid the development of root rot; in summer, it is also necessary to spray the leaves with water;
  • Pots and repotting: repot the cactus every 3 years at the end of winter or in spring, between February and April; make sure that the pot is not too large, is well-draining and that you use aerated soil with a slightly acidic pH (peat, for example);
  • Positioning and exposure: a Christmas cactus requires specific light and temperature conditions, so you need to place your plant in the right place so it will flower. The ideal place is on an inside windowsill with a eastern exposure. Maintain a constant temperature of around 20 degrees C. Keep away from radiators, drafts and, if you move it outdoors in summer, put it in a shaded spot.

Taking these precautions, your Christmas cactus will be sure to give you loads of wonderful flowers!
