Modern farmhouse-styled bedroom: the haven of contemporary comfort with a rustic charm

What is a modern farmhouse-styled bedroom? Well, it is a room that combines the rustic charm of the farmhouse style, together with modern design details.

In this sense, this style is simple, using natural materials and neutral colors which blend together to create a warm and comfortable environment. So, a bedroom furnished in this style will be a mix of old and new, with neither element dominating. The aim is to find a balance between vintage and modern elements and which also suits our tastes and needs.

Neutral colors are prominent in the furnishings: shades of white, gray and beige are usually quite pronounced. But this does not mean you cannot use the darker end of the spectrum: darker greys, or even black can be used to outline/frame certain elements or to add decorative patterns onto neutral backgrounds.

The color palette can also include blacks, anthracite grey, sepia and other colors that create contrast without clashing. The overall idea is that the room should become a calming sanctuary. And the natural materials present in the room can be used as a guide for the color combinations you will choose to use: if you want to use certain types of wood or stone in the room, then these materials must integrate harmoniously with the rest of the decor!

Wood is iconic when it comes to defining the rustic style. However, this does not mean the exclusive use of "raw" wood: modernity is brought into this decor in the way in which the wood is worked and finished.

An example of what this means is shown in the above photo: wood panels cover the walls, with elegant trims and thin frames, and painted in light colors (including a warm white).

Of course, blankets and pillows are must-haves for this decor. They should be decorative but also functional - after all, the comfort of a room should be experienced and not just for "show". And the materials and textures used for the room's accessories play an important role. Examples include rattan or wicker baskets, ceramics, a rough finish on a lamp stand and lacquered wood in the background.

A large carpet/rug under the bed, and which extends a few feet around the edges (to greet our bare feet with warmth and softness!), is a very fetching feature. Again, the colors in the carpet should harmonize with the decor of the rest of the room: no dramatic contrasts, but rather a harmony of graduated shadings.

As for the light fitting (the lamps and lampshades), it is perfectly fine for them to be of a more modern flavor, but not so modern as to appear out-of-place with the rest of the decor.

The Scandinavian style can be used as inspiration for making a room look "rustic but modern". Minimalist and geometrically  balanced, but not compromising on creating a comfortable, hospitable atmosphere.

If you decide to go for this modern farmhouse style, remember that it needs to satisfy your personal tastes too. Ask yourself what you like, what you use the room for and what you need. Then, try to provide for these needs within the parameters of the style. This way, you can enjoy the overall decor without giving up your personality!
