"Prevention is better than cure," they say, and this folk wisdom holds true here too. Here's some preventative measures you can take to prevent limescale from being deposited on your bathroom's surfaces:

  • Water and pressure: when using water, using warm water will reduce the possibility of limescale forming. Additionally, try to keep the water pressure as low as possible - high pressure causes water to splash, marrring nearby surfaces and depositing limescale on them.
  • Drying off immediately: Immediately after using the water and before it evaporates naturally, wipe down and dry off any residual moisture. This is significantly reduce the chances of limescale being deposited on the surfaces.
  • Detergent: Typically bathroom surfaces and faucets are cleaned using special detergents. Try not to overdo the use of these detergents as they could damage their protective coatings, leaving a "foothod" for limescale to take advantage of.

Despite taking all these precautions, has limescale still formed in your bathroom? Well, don't give up as some everyday products can help you easily eliminate this problem:

  • White wine vinegar: An important ally for home cleaning chores, white wine vinegar is excellent for dissolving and removing limescale. Mix the vinegar in equal parts with water and spray it on the affected surface; alternatively, you can soak a rag or a bit of cotton wool in the solution and place it on limescale crusts. Leave the solution to act for at least 10 minutes and the limescale should be dissolved away in this time. However, for very stubborn limescale deposits, you can create a paste with vinegar and bicarbonate and rub it onto the build-ups.
  • Lemon: Lemon juice, thanks to its acidity, is also very effective in combating limescale. It can be used by itself, or in combination with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or with vinegar. In fact, if you mix these three ingredients together and apply the solution to the affected area (leaving it to act for a few minutes), you will be amazed by the results.
  • Shaving cream: Effective and also easy to use. Simply squirt some shaving cream over the limescale, leave it to act for a few minutes and then wipe away. Use a damp cloth to remove the bulk of the cream and then finish off by wiping down with a clean, dry cloth.
