Long neglected as something outdated and dull, wallpaper has made a triumphant comeback in the world of interior design recently, and it will continue to be in the spotlight in 2024. Since its resurgence, we've witnessed the beauty of modern wallpaper patterns, contemporary reinterpretations of classics, and even entirely innovative uses.
In the upcoming year, we can expect to see a lot more wallpaper around, with specific trends that seem poised to gain popularity. Let's explore what these trends are:
Wallpaper, but on the ceiling!
The idea is not entirely new, but it hasn't yet taken off everywhere yet. Decorating the ceiling with wallpaper is a choice that more and more people are making, and the results are starting to get a positive reception. Some opt for very subtle wallpaper just on the ceiling, echoing the colors (perhaps bolder) of the furniture or walls. On the other hand, there are those who use much bolder prints.
At times, we see delicate patterns, while in other instances, it's the modern version of once-popular frescoed ceilings - all at a fraction of the cost that those would entail. Additionally, much like the concept of color drenching (where bold colors cover all surfaces), some are applying the same idea to wallpaper!
Accent wall becomes "accent wallpapered wall"
Until recently, an accent wall consisted in only decorating one specific wall (or a portion of a wall) in a color that contrast with rest of the surroundings. Now, doing the same with wallpaper is becoming increasingly popular.
Bedroom, kitchen, living room and even bathroom: there isn't a room in the house where you can't decorate a wall with a beautiful floral, animal, landscape, traditional or geometric pattern printed on wallpaper!
When wallpaper becomes a work of art
And then, there are those who take the idea of showing off the wallpaper used only on a portion of a room to the next level: considering that, increasingly, wallpapers can also be prints of still lifes or landscapes, "framing" them as if they were works of art was the next obvious step (as can be seen in this example).

True enthusiasts will invest in getting designer wallpapers: famous artists and illustrators have turned their hands to producing wallpaper designs. This "upmarket" wallpaper is a medium you can then use to surround yourself with true art!
Vintage inspirations
The love for wallpaper cannot be separated from the past: originally, wallpaper was often made of fine fabrics, typically damask (a reversible patterned fabric of silk, wool, linen, cotton, or synthetic fibers, with a pattern formed by weaving). Modern versions of this "vintage" wallpaper can now be found commercially.
