At Christmas, we all want to do something special when entertaining our friends and family - especially when dining together. Usually, we take out the "fancy" service and use centerpieces, place cards and candles to set the scene for a wonderful spread. However, we might be getting bored using the same items to do this year after year...

Pay attention to the small details
If you already know which tablecloth and set of dishes to use, you can make things extra special by paying attention to small, decorative touches. For example, decorating each diner's plate with a few twigs from an evergreen (thuja, certain fir trees, rosemary, etc), adding some cinnamon sticks and a slice of dried orange.
Another idea is to use small, Christmas-themed socks to hold each diner's cutlery and napkin. Quickly and easily done, this will create a great Christmas atmosphere at the table!
If you have red and white-striped candy canes, these are perfect for decorating the plates on the table.
And obviously, even a plain service can be made "Christmassy": even with simple, white plates, you can make snowmen with a red napkin for a scarf and a few berries for eyes, nose, mouth and buttons!

The Christmas place card
There are many ideas for Christmas table place cards, which are an easy way to make each guest feel truly special. A couple of candy canes are all you need (as you can see in the photo). But you can also use a sprig of rosemary, for example, for the same purpose.
White Christmas: it doesn't take much to create the magic of the season
If you want the whole table to have a Christmassy appearance, place some candles - in decorative candlesticks - in the center of the table. This works very well if everything is in white, including the tablecloth and crockery!
Paper decorations for a more modern look
In the center of the table, it's nice to have some plants or flowers and, at Christmas, we usually try to use seasonal evergreens for this. That said, it's not always easy to find suitable evergreen twigs and branches, be they real or artificial. But cutting out plants from paper or cardboard - as shown here - is definitely within everyone's reach and means!
Candles are a must-have!
If you have some regular candles, but they seem too bland to use as a decoration, get some red fruit and a few sprigs of rosemary (or similar). With a little string and a tray, you can put together a very cute centerpiece in minutes!
A Christmas landscape on the table
Miniature Christmas villages are a very popular decoration in recent times. If you have some of these miniature houses, place them in the centre of the table, add some moss and some fairy lights. This is all it takes to create a wonderful Christmas landscape on your tabletop!
DIY miniature trees
Are you looking for a way to create an enchanted forest (perhaps to go with a miniature Christmas village)? With some wooden disks and twigs from a suitable evergreen (cypress, thuja, yew are some examples) and a little glue, you can have a forest in a jiffy!
A rustic, easy-to-make centerpiece
For those who prefer a more rustic and traditional look, using lanterns is always a winner: put a candle inside a latern, ad some evergreens and a few Christmas baubles to complete the look!
