Smart gardens for hydroponic cultivation in limited spaces: for anyone who does not have a garden or a balcony, nor enough space for planters, these are a way not to abandon a desire to grow fresh herbs and vegetables at home. That said, the smart garden system only works for small plants, such as certain types of tomatoes. But for growing aromatic herbs, a smart garden is perfect.

Let's find out more about this cultivation system:

Hydroponic cultivation systems use continuous water recycling as the nutrition source, meaning you don't have to use a lot of soil. Lighting cycles help to replicate the conditions that the plants would have in the wild. This lighting is usually suppied by energy-saving LED lights.

When you opt to purchase a hydroponics system, you will obviously need to check consumption rates, and also other factors such as: the capacity of the appliance; the measurement systems (timers) for the water; the lighting required; and the cost of the seeds/seed capsules

In terms of seeds, specific sponges (which function as a substrate) are available which already have seeds laid down and are ready for germination and which come as part of the kit - but this is not always the case. Therefore, check if there are offers that include complete kits at competitive prices.

Some models also have features that are highly valued by users, for example:

  • A window that allows you to see the water level clearly;
  • An easy-to-use and intuitive control panel to adjusts the lights and other systems;
  • LED lights that can be adjusted in height relative to the plants;
  • A water circulation pump which activates and deactivates automatically.

The most popular smart garden models online are equipped with specific operating modes depending on the type of plant you want to grow. So, there will be settings for aromatic herbs, and other setting for vegetables and even flowers.

Obviously, although growth is fast, your harvest will not be huge. So if you plan to use, for exampel, aromatic herbs on an industrial scale, this is not the system for you. But for those who use herbs and spices occassionally, a smart garden is perfect (and makes for a great gift idea too).
