The period before Christmas is always a time of joyful anticipation where you can already feel the magic of the festive season. And among the best things to do, decorating the home certainly ranks up there.

We can choose to spend time on the web or in shops hunting for beautiful decorations, or we can also choose to go the DIY route. This latter option is a great way to entertain ourselves and we can even include the kids in the fun.

Whether you are an expert DIYer or just a beginner, there many easy-to-do projects you can try out to decorate your home with your own hands.

Even if it is your very first DIY/craft project, we are sure that this a balloon wreath will be easy for you to put together. Simply inflate the balloons and tie them together to create a wreath which will look truly spectacular. Choose the classic Christmas colors or "go bold" using copper, brass or gold-colored balloons.

Make a string of very soft lights using wool and acrylic thread. Get some pom-poms and cut them using scissors into the shape of colored light bulbs. Then, take some wooden spools for sewing thread and paint them with acrylic colours. Now, thread the tails of your pom-poms throught the spools and and attach them to a string of fairy lights. Decorate a staircase, door, windows or an empty wall with this lovely decoration.

Recycle your glass jars to create adorable centerpieces. Make a base inside a jar using Epsom salt, sea salt or even white decorative pebbles and fill the vases with fresh berries and evergreen sprigs that you can collect in the woods or from your garden. Add candles to create the perfect atmosphere at the table.

For your Christmas tree, make unique decorations using wool balls. You can make these simply by getting some plastic balls (old balls from your tree are fine too) or polystyrene balls and wrapping them with woolen thread. Use hot glue to attach the wool to the plastic or styrofoam. Wrap around the wool until your ball looks like a ball of yarn, then insert some wooden sticks to which you have attached small pom poms at the ends. Your very unique baubles are now ready for the tree!

Bottle brushes are perfect for making very original Christmas pine trees. Use them as is or cover them in glitter for a brighter effect and scatter them throughout your home - they will be beautiful in their simplicity.

If you have basic sewing skills, it will be relatively simple to make DIY decorative cushions. Use a paper template to give your cushions the shape of Christmas baubles and choose the fabric you like; velvet and lamé are excellent materials, which will give your cushions that soft and shiny appearance typical for Christmas decorations. Grab your stuffing, scissors, needle and thread and get cracking!

With wooden pegs, you can make lovely decorations for your Christmas tree: get a wooden peg, remove the spring that joins the two halves together and glue them to form circles or snowflakes. For a truly original and creative Christmas wreth, get a polystyrene circle and cover it in fabric.  Then, cut out Santa's underwear and suit from red felt. Once done, stick these "laundry items" to a taut woolen thread stretched across the wreath, to look like Santa's clothes drying on the line. Finish off by adding a few bows.
