Is your bed cold and inhospitable in winter? Warm it up with these 8 tips
One of the great annoyances of winter is getting into cold bed in the evening and there is nothing worse than this when trying to get a good night's sleep.
The good news is that heating up the bed in winter is simple to do - certainly much easier than cooling a bed down at the height of summer!
Also remember that the heat of the human body is the main source of heating for your blankets and - if you can bear it - you just need to wait for you body heat to heat up a cold bed.
But if you can't wait and want to jump into a warm bed immediately, what can you do? Well, check out the 8 tips below:
1. Warm up the bedroom
During the night, the use of radiators can disturb your sleep and it is expensive; however, you can heat the bedroom during the evening, at dinnertime, by closing the bedroom door so that the heat remains trapped inside. Put draft excluders on the windows and under the door to prevent cold air from entering and use thick, thermal curtains.
2. Layer sheets and blankets

It may seem trivial, but the correct layering of sheets and blankets is essential for your bed to heat up properly. Layering multiple sheets and blankets, preferably alternating thick and thin layers, is preferable to simply using a duvet, as this layer will promote thermal insulation and prevent heat loss. Furthermore, thanks to the layering, it will be easier to uncover yourself during the night if you get hot.
3. The right materials
Choose the right materials to really warm up your bed at bedtime. The best material to guarantee great thermal comfort is wool, such as Cashmere, Merino, Alpaca. All of these wool types are capable of offering you softness and a pleasant sensation of warmth.
An excellent alternative to wool is fleece, a synthetic fabric that simulates wool's properties.
For sheets, chose flannel, which is thicker and softer than other fabrics (and therefore more insulating).
4. Pajamas and socks
While flannel or fleece pajamas are not the most attractive of attire, they will undoubtedly help you sleep more peacefully by promoting greater thermal insulation. If your feet are your weak point and are always cold, wear a pair of thick socks to bed to prevent them from getting cold.
5. Hot water bottles
Raise your hand if you have a hot water bottle at home. Well, if you love getting under the covers and finding an enveloping warmth to greet you, place a hot water bottle under the covers a bit before going to bed.
6. Heated bedding
If the classic methods are not enough for you, you can always choose to equip your bed with heated bedding, such as a mattress covers or an electric blanket. Heated bedding is a rather expensive choice, especially in terms of consumption, but it will certainly guarantee you warmth all night long.
7. Pay attention to the stuffing
When it's time to change duvets, make sure the replacement has the right amount of stuffing to ensure sufficient thermal insulation during the night. Change duvets by progressively by increasing their stuffing: this way, you will always have the right duvet (with the right "thickness") for all seasons.
8. Hug your partner, your pet or your pillow
Finally, we remind you that there is nothing better than the heat of another living being to warm you up. If you don't sleep alone, snuggle up next to your partner to feel warmer. Alternatively, cuddle your dog or let your cat curl up next to you.
And what if we don't even have a pet? Well, there is always an extra pillow...
Good (warm) night!
