Clogged sink: does the yogurt method really work?

Every time we notice that water isn't draining properly from the sink, it a cause for concern, and rightly so. A clogged sink can be due to a minor issue but could also turn into an unexpectedly significant - and expensive - problem to solve. As a result, there is no shortage of advice on how to try to remedy the situation, often using household ingredients. Many of these suggestions are actually effective, but some are less reliable.

So, where does the idea of using yogurt to unclog a drain fit in on this scale? Is yogurt really effective in clearing blockages? Let's find out together if this method works:

This "yogurt issue" is a much debated one: online, there are many suggestions for using yogurt as an alternative to common remedies for unclogging a sink.

Specifically, it is recommended that one uses plain, smooth white yogurt (without sugar or pieces of fruit, cereals, biscuits, and similar), or Greek yogurt, which is denser. The theory behind this practice is that the enzymes in yogurt can "eat away" at the blockage in the pipes, helping to break it down and remove the obstruction. However, there are no studies or expert opinions in the field that scientifically confirm this theory.

Of course, there are things to avoid doing when it comes to what we pour down the drain. For example, substances that can solidify with the cold and cause blockages - fatty substances especially - should never be poured down the drain. And if the yogurt accumulates near the mass causing the blockage, it might actually make the situation worse. Additionally, if yogurt is poured together with boiling water (which is known to dissolve blockages), it could compromise the effectiveness of the yogurt's enzymes.

Another important consideration is that, although yogurt is a natural substance, no dairy products, including yogurt, should be poured into the drains because these are substances that do not break down easily. This could affect oxygen levels in water pipes, also potentially causing damage.

Finally, it's worth noting that this solution might not be exactly cheap.

As mentioned above, our best ally for this problem is boiling water. Heat water in a pot or kettle and pour it down the drain: it will effectively dissolve the fatty deposits that might be causing the blockage.

Additionally, you can sprinkle baking soda between each hot water treatment. White vinegar - warmed up a bit first - can also be poured down the drain shortly after the baking soda for an even more effective treatment.

If the methods mentioned above do not work, it's always best to consult a plumber.
