Frequently, we find ourselves needing to clean something at home without having the appropriate detergent to hand, right? In these situations, dishwasher tablets can be useful to clean away stubborn dirt from various surfaces.

An important "trick" to remember when using these tablets correctly is to use very hot/boiling water. An electric kettle can be a useful here - or alternatively, a pot of boiling water, to be handled with care - can also be used. Below, are some alternative uses for dishwasher tablets you can consider:

If you have eating utensils/cutlery that that you need to clean (and there aren't enough dishes to run the dishwasher), you don't need to wait:

All you need to do is get a heat-resistant container and boil up some water. Gather up your dirty utensils and proceed as follows:

• Pour the boiling water into the container.
• Add a dishwasher tablet and let it dissolve thoroughly.
• Immerse the utensils and wait at least ten minutes.
• Rinse off the utensils.
• Polish them using a soft cloth.

Blocked drains: try a dishwasher tablet

If you notice that the water isn't draining properly from a sink, close the plug and place a dishwasher tablet in the plughole. Without displacing it, pour boiling water over the tablet - in this case, using a kettle is the most convenient. You don't need to fill the sink with water - you need just enough to keep the tablet immersed and able to dissolve.

Open the drain, and as soon as the water starts to drain, continue pouring in the rest of the boiling water. It's not a problem if some pieces of the tablet remain; the dissolved tablet and the boiling water should be sufficient to clear minor blockages.

Clear grime from the oven glass using dishwasher tablets

Did you know that you can use a dishwasher tablet a bit like a rubber eraser? This can be the ideal solution for stubborn grime, such as that which formd on the glass of an oven. To do this, simply dip one corner of the tablet in some hot water to soften it a bit, and then start rubbing on the grime.

Rub ove all of the glass, then dip a sponge or cloth in warm water and rub again to remove the girme. Then, rinse off thoroughly.

Dirty stains on the collars of white clothes

There is no makeup that doesn't leave traces and marks on collars of clothes. But with a dishwasher tablet, you can pre-treat these dirty garments. Pour some very hot water into a basin and dissolve the tablet into it. Immerse the garment and let it soak for half an hour. Then rub the stained area with the soapy water. Gently wring out and put the garment in the washing machine for a regular wash.

As this method involves dissolving the tablet in very hot water, it is not suitable for colored garments or delicate fabrics.

Cleaning the trash can

If you need to clean and deodorize the trash can, let a dishwasher tablet do the job: as always, start with very hot (steaming) water which is poured into the trash can, then add the tablet. Close the lid and let the tablet dissolve, trapping the steam inside the bin. Do not use this method on plastic trash cans that cannot withstand boiling water.

Empty out the water after 15-20 minutes, and any residue can be removed with paper towels.
