Delicacies for celebrations, an impromptu lunch or dinner that leaves the kitchen a bit chaotic, or even simple daily use: almost every time we cook on the stove or in the oven, there's a possibility that strong odors may linger in the room, often spreading to the rest of the house. Even by washing pots and countertops, we don't always manage to eliminate these odors completely. And if something was burned, then things get very challenging.

Fortunately, we can use natural remedies to make unpleasant odors disappear, and we'll details 3 of these below:

This remedy involves taking charcoal briquettes - the ones used for barbecues - and placing them on a small plate or tray near where strong odors are likely to occur.

It's also useful to put two or three pieces of charcoal in a breathable fabric bag (cotton, gauze, wide-weave linen, etc), so it looks nicer. Briquettes can be kept for weeks, and easily replaced after a while.

This remedy also works great inside the refrigerator; with this simple tip, the fridge will always be deodorized.

If, on the other hand, we need to act quicker, the action of charcoal might be too slow. In this case, it's time to use a natural ingredient that always has a pleasant scent: lemon.

The method is easy: boil a lemon in a pot for at least ten minutes, then leave the pot open to continue putting out steam and spreading its delicate fragrance. Lemon is excellent for absorbing unpleasant smells and replacing them with a fresh and clean aroma.

How else can we use lemon? Proceed as follows:

  • Prepare a jar of dried peels in advance. Every time you use a fresh lemon, keep the peels and let them dry out. When needed, put a handful of peels in a pot to boil (as described above).
  • Another way to prepare the peelsis to put them in a bag or jar in the freezer. This way, there's no need to wait for them to dry.
  • If you have freshly-squeezed lemons, you can also use them in the boiling pot of water!
  • Alternatively, if you're using fresh lemons, it's best to cut them into slices and put them in the pot.

If you like this method, you can also customize it by adding mint, lavender, or rosemary leaves!

When it comes to remedies for absorbing bad odors, how can we not mention baking soda? Similar to charcoal, it will help to prepare a bowl of baking soda (fill it to at least halfway), placed right near the stove or inside the oven. Let it act overnight, and it will absorb the unpleasant smells.

In this case too, you can add an extra touch with a few drops of essential oil - two or three will be enough.

Also, remember to ventilate the room/kitchen thoroughly and immediately after cooking and before using these remedies so that they can take effect faster!
