Make your own Christmas ornaments by hand: cute ideas for decorating your tree
Every year, as the Christmas holidays approach, plans to decorate the Christmas tree are fun to contemplate - a sort of ritual that is nice to share with loved ones. There are those who use the same, carefully-stored decorations every year; then there are others who use new ones each Christmas. In both cases, there is still room to add at least a few new ornaments and we can make these ourselves.
We can use wood, paper, cloth and even dried fruit. Check out the ideas below to find the one that's right for you:
Wooden ornaments
Amongst the ornaments most in line with Christmas traditions, are wooden ones: they definitely give off "rustic vibes" and are also easy to make. In fact, it doesn't take long to cut wooden discs from a branch and then each of these discs can be decorated however you like.
You can use permanent markers, but also paint them using tempera or acrylic paints. You can use a pyrograph, a soldering iron or even transfers/stickers of photos and other images! There's a thousand ways to personalize these decorations.
A slightly more unusual idea is to create stylized Christmas icons using nails and colored threads, weaving the latter around the former, until the design comes to life.
Another idea is to string wooden beads which are useful in making many decorations. You can create circles but also stars and more!
DIY paper decorations
Three-dimensional and with a look reminiscent of beehives: these hanging ornaments are truly very elegant. You will need good quality paper, and obviously in colors that best suits the style you have decided on for your tree/theme.
These paper decorations have a more traditional look, and you could use cards with Christmas prints to make them. You can even make these decorations as spheres or spindles.
Do you prefer the idea of bright and cheerful decorations? Well, this project could be for you!
Handmade clay ornaments
Working with clay is a process that requires a little patience, but it is also very relaxing. If you have some cake molds, it will be easier to make, for example, lots of stars (which you can then leave/bake to dry out). Remember to put some small holes in each decoration before it hardens so you can hang them up with cord or ribbons.
And you don't have to use clay. In fact, you can use appropriately colored plasticine - like FIMO - to create wonderful candy canes!
DIY ornaments using fabric
Easy to make, this little tree is beautiful: created using felt cut into squares and stacked on top of each other, getting smaller towards the top. There is a hole in the center for a wire to pass through. At the bottom you can use some pipe cleaners or pieces of wood or cork for the trunk!
For these Christmassy-colored candies, it's all about finding a fabric that has the right look. Then just wrap the fabric around something round: plastic caps, candy boxes, metal caps, and more!
Ornaments created by using fruit
If you have plants in your garden that produce red berries (like holly, for example), you can have fun stringing them on a like pearls to make beautiful ornaments.
And you can create these ornaments in any shape by using dried fruit (such as sultanas, raisins and similar). It will be fun ti do any of these projects with the kids too!
