6 kitchen-furnishing trends to avoid if you want your kitchen to stay in vogue
The kitchen is the heart of every home, since it is area where we spend most of our time and where we prepare our meals. It is also the room in which we invest the most in terms of furniture, appliances and other accessories we use in it.
Given the importance of the kitchen, it is important that we make sound decisions when it come to outfitting and equipping them. We want to ensure we buy and deploy resources, materials and appliances that will stand the test of time.
Below, we outline 6 kitchen outfitting approaches/trends which you might want to avoid choosing from:
1. Ultra-modern kitchens
The ultra-modern style is very popular these days for its clean, high-tech look. The risk, however, is that of looking cold, impersonal and sterile. And remember: what is deemed modern today could become quickly outdated tomorrow.
2. Shaded or frosted lights

Once very trendy, frosted or shaded lamps risk making our kitchens seem cramped and dark. Opt for brighter alternatives, such as unshaded light bulbs or transparent glass light fittings.
3. Traditional cherry wood kitchen
A classic and traditional look - with wood as the main component - is undoubtedly a timeless choice for kitchens. However, the choice of a "all cherry wood look" (despite having been very popular years ago), is now a decidedly outdated trend. It's better to go for a mix of dark and light woods, natural and finished, for a truly timeless look.
4. Granite counters
Much appreciated for its durability, granite countertops have now given way to solutions with a lighter and brighter appearance, such as counters in white quartz or quartzite (which are equally robust and easier to clean).
5. Open shelves

Open shelves are a very popular trend right now, but are we sure the trend will continue? Closed doors can hide many defects in a kitchen, as well as providing protection to dishes from dust and grime.
6. Excessive DIYing
DIY is a great way to save money, but be careful not to overdo it. In the kitchen, it is important to have good quality fixtures and fittings which will stand the test of time. Therefore, try to limit DIYing to "less important" items.
Also, try not to clutter your kitchen with too many knick-knacks, ornaments or other superfluous objects and decorations.
