Wine stains on the sofa or mattress? Remove them permanently with these natural remedies
Sipping on a glass of wine while relaxing on the sofa or in bed can be very relaxing, but if we are not careful, accidents can happen.
Wine is like a dye and when it spills on fabrics, it can stain them permanently, sometimes forcing us to replace the stained item. We know that acting fast is essential: removing a fresh stain is much simpler than when it has dried out. Sometimes, however, all our efforts can prove fruitless.
Before rushing out to purchase expensive specialist detergents, calling a professional cleaner or replacing the sofa or mattress, you can try using some natural ingredients you probably already have at home.
While white wine stains are fairly simple to remove with a little detergent and a lot of patience, red wine stains can be much more complicated. Check out the advice below:
Remove fresh wine stains from mattresses and sofas
If treated promptly, fresh wine stains can be eliminated much more easily than dried ones. In this case, first remove any excess wine by dabbing the stain with a sponge or dry cloth. Once done, you can easily remove the stain by applying and leaving one of the following products to act on the stain for about 15 minutes:
- table salt;
- sodium bicarbonate;
- talcum powder;
- sodium percarbonate;
- Marseille soap: in this case, you will need to dissolve some flakes in warm water and dab the stain using a sponge. Leave to act, then rinse off thoroughly and dry.
Remove dried wine stains from mattresses and sofas
If the wine stain has already dried, it is still possible to get excellent results by using natural products:
- baking soda and white vinegar: these two ingredients mixed together can give excellent results when it comes to removing stains from fabrics; sprinkle the surface to be cleaned with baking soda, spray with white alcohol vinegar and leave to act until the effervescence reaction is finished. If necessary, repeat the operation several times;
- lemon juice: a remedy suitable for both fresh and old stains, you can apply the juice directly to the stain, add a few drops of liquid Marseille soap and leave to act for a few minutes before rinsing and drying;
- hydrogen peroxide: finally, hydrogen peroxide can also help you remove dried wine stains; just wet the surface to be treated by dabbing with a sponge and leave it to act for 10 minutes, then dab dry with a clean cloth.
With these methods, your mattresses and sofas will be as good as new in no time!
