What are some of the things that we should never keep in our closets?
The change of seasons is the ideal time to do a little cleaning of our closets. Who among us doesn't have a closet that's too full and stuffed with absolutely useless things? We've all said: "I might need it one day". But if there are things we don't use, let's give them away if we don't actually use them. And there are some objects that should never, ever be placed in a closet.
Let's find out what we can get rid of and what we should never put in a closet.
How to tidy up your closet
Keeping your closets tidy can be a real challenge. There are always too many things to store but it might seem impossible to part with, for example, an old pair of socks we wore when we were in high school. And all of us hold on to basically useless items (for sentimental reasons, usually). There are experts who study this hoarding phenomenon and can offer us some advice:
- Hangers: Let's start with a very simple thing - clothes hangers. If we use, say, ten, why keep more? Throw away unused hangers and claim back the space;
- Clothes: No, we are not saying that you should throw away all your clothes, but only those that don't fit you and are at least 10 years old. Why do we persist in keeping these garments? Maybe they are linked to a happy moment in our life and/or we are sentimentally attached. But getting some new replacements can give us back the space we need;
- Lost, not found: If we have socks that are no longer in a proper pair, why are these singles still in our closet? What can you do with a single sock? Nothing! So come on, and get rid of it (or turn it into a cleaning rag);
- Bags: Woman love their handbags and they are used as must-have fashion accessories? But do we really use them all - even the old and worn-out ones? The answer is probably no, so let's take a deep breath and put these in the garbage bin. Our closets will thank us.
What to never put in a closet
Once we have removed everything that is superfluous, we can move on to those things which should never be found in a closet - for various reasons:
- Shoes: Unless they are brand new, immaculate and kept in their box, footwear should not be placed around/near our clothes. The risk is that an unpleasant smell from the shoes could transfer to the clothes. To avoid this, and to make space, use shoe racks to store your shoes on/in;
- Food: Do we want the convenience of being able to munch on a snack while in bed? That's okay, but the main point is not to store food in closets. Crumbs and food scents could attract insects that can damage your clothes. It's not worth taking this risk. Use a bedside table as a mini pantry;
- Jewelry. Moving jewelry around in a closet could end up with it getting caught in the fabric of our garments and creating a pull, a ladder or even a tear. Rather keep your precious jewelry in a safe;
- Pet toys: These toys should definitely not be kept in a closet. The hair that sticks to them, the smells and their general "dirtiness" could damage our garments. Find another place for your pets' toys.
A tidy, pleasantly-scented closet
It may take a bit of effort, and throwing away things we are sentimentally attached to, can be difficult. But, in the end, having a neat, tidy, pleasantly-scented closet for our garments (and other items) will be a blessing in disguise and our possessions will thank us!
