Solve your daily cleaning challenges with these 8 amazing DIY tips
In our home life we face small challenges every day. Cleaning and the management of our homes can be a real drag and eats up a lot of our time.
As a result, many home carers take to the web to search for any advice on how best to efficiently, effectively and quickly clean their homes - and keep them clean.
Today, we suggest 8 DIY tips that will almost certainly make your daily home cleaning chores easier:
1. Emergency clothes horse
How often do you have a significant load of laundry to do? Well, in these cases, your clothes horse may not be big enough for your drying needs. When this happens, you can devise an "emergency clothes horse" by using two chairs and some clothesline.
In an appropriate spot, position 2 chairs sufficiently far apart from each other and with the seats point away from each other. Take some clothesline and attach it to the backs of the two chairs, stretching it between them. Now, you have an extra clothes horse for your laundry (you may want to weigh the seats of the chairs down with books, bricks or something similar to prevent the chairs from falling over due to the weight of the wet laundry).
2. Cleaning of fittings and fixtures
The fixtures and fittings (like window frames) are a part of our home that we clean less frequently, but this does not mean can neglect them. When we vacuum them, we can use a straw attached to the vacuum's pipe/nozzle to get at hard-to-reach areas.
In this way, your window sills (for example) will remain free from dust and dirt and it will be easier to deal with when it's time to spring clean.
3. Eliminate unpleasant odors emanating from shoes
Shoes easily develop unpleasant odors: being closed and absorbing sweat creates the perfect environment for the proliferation of germs and bacteria which, in turn, give off unpleasant odors.
While airing out your shoes and using deodorants and special shoe powders can be a good solution, socks are also very useful. Wearing socks (rather than going barefoot) helps to absorb foot sweat and prevents (or significantly delays) the occurance of bad smells. A similar remedy involves using fabric covers for the insoles.
Now, your shoes will remain odor-free for longer!
4. Deep cleaning of the stove
The kitchen is, together with the bathroom, the spot we use and clean most often. But unfortunately, there are some areas that get dirty despite our daily cleaning.
For example, are you able to remove all the dirt from your stove top - especially around the edges? Regular cleaning may not be effective here. To get into these hard-to-reach spots, wrap a damp cloth around the blade of a knife and slide it gently along the edges and into any other nooks and crannies.
This way, you will be able to easily remove this stubborn grime.
5. Anti-rust
Otudoors, there are many metal fittings that can easily rust. To clean these items, just take a sheet of aluminum foil and rub it on their surfaces. Then wipe with a clean cloth to remove the dislodged rust and your metal fittings will gleam again.
6. DIY toilet deodorizer
Make your own DIY toilet deodorizer that is cheap and eco-friendly. You just need to mix some coarse salt with an essential oil of your choice and place this mixture into the cistern. Alternatively you can use a simple cotton or net bag to hang the mixture in the bowl.
7. New sofa cushions
Do you need to change the covers of your sofa's cushions? Well, there's no need to buy new ones! Take a piece of fabric you have laying around, place your pillow on it, fold it around the pillow and knot it in the middle. Now you have a new, zero-cost, DIY cushion cover!
8. A properly cleaned toilet
As with stoves, the edges of the toilet can be difficult to get at and clean.
Clean these areas with steel wool and a steam cleaner: start by scrubbing the edges with the steel wool to remove any excess dirt. Then, turn on the steam cleaner and direct the nozzle at edges of your toilet: any remaining dirt will be removed in an instant.
