Are you sure you are washing your bed linen correctly? Check out these common mistakes many make
When we go to bed at night, we hope for peaceful sleep with sweet dreams. For this reason, it is of fundamental importance to keep our bedroom tidy, clean and properly organized.
One thing we frequently do is to change the sheets. But often, we do not pay much attention or care to how we wash dirty sheets.
You may be surprised about how many mistakes people make when washing their sheets. Curious? Well, keep reading...
A list of commonly-made mistakes is detailed below:
1. Washing frequency
How many of you wait until the sheets are visibily dirty before changing and washing them? Changing/washing sheets too often will compromise the fabric of the sheets, which, in turn, will make them harder to keep hygenic and turn out clean.
The correct washing frequency is once every 2 weeks (although in summer or if you sweat a lot, this could be reduced to once a week).
2. Forgetting to read the labels
Creativo
When doing a wash we may think we know what program to use, but it is important to carefully read the washing instructions on the labels first. In fact, each fabric type requires different washing methods and temperature. When you wash new sheets for the first time, make sure to read the labels first.
3. Overloading the washing machine
Whether your washing machine is too small to accommodate your bed linen or whether you usually wash other items together with the sheets, overloading the washing machine is not a good idea: in addition to the possibility of causing damage to the appliance, you risk of having to repeat the wash for a second time. An excessive wash load prevents the water and detergent from getting to (and cleaning) all the fabrics.
4. Wash separately
Washing towels and clothes together with your sheets may seem like a good idea to reduce the number of wash cycles and save on resources, but mixing different fabrics is not always a good idea. Each fabric has its own specific washing method and washing multiple different fabrics could create a lot of friction, damaging the fabrics.
Furthermore, placing clothes with buttons and zips in the drum could tear your sheets. It is therefore much better to wash the sheets separately.
5. Using too much of an aggressive detergent
There is a (mistaken) belief that increasing the amount of detergent used will improve the cleanliness of your wash. But excess detergent, however, can lead to getting the opposite result: the excess detergent could stick to the fibres, staining the items and degrading the fabrics (resulting in the appearance of tears and holes).
Similarly, using a detergent that is too aggressive could easily ruin your washing. Rather use a natural and delicate detergent and use sodium percarbonate (rather than bleach) for whitening and stain removal purposes.
6. Wash pillows one at a time
Pillows are very bulky and should be washed individually. Pillows also absorb a lot of water and by the end of the wash cycle they become very heavy, preventing the washing machine from spinning correctly. Avoid this inconvenience by balancing the load: if you are washing 2 pillows, wash them separately, but spin them together - this will help to balance out the load.
