Easily remove rust stains from sheets and turn them brilliantly white again
White sheets have always been highly popular because the "whiteness" can convey a feeling of cleanliness and freshness. Unfortunately, over time, white sheets often lose their brilliance and turn grey.
Amongst the most difficult stains to remove is rust, which can be transferred from a rusty clothes horse or washing line. But don't despair! There are several remedies that can help us remove rust stains from our precious sheets.
Check out the tips below:
Natural remedies to remove rust stains from white sheets
There are several natural remedies that help you remove rust from your sheets and the first one we suggest is a mixture of 3 ingredients: water, salt and lemon.
Using this method/mixture, you simply have to moisten the stained sheet and sprinkle it with salt, then add some lemon juice. Expose the sheet to the sun and let it dry completely before checking whether the stain has been removed. If this is not the case, repeat the operation. When the stain has finally vanished, proceed with a regular machine or hand wash.
A second method involves the use of white vinegar, which also allows us to keep our sheets soft and free of unpleasant odors. You can use vinegar neat or mixed with table salt. In the second case, you will need to dissolve the salt in the vinegar before using. Moisten a cloth with vinegar and rub the stained part of your sheet until it is clean again. At this point, you can do a regular wash, pouring a cup of vinegar into the fabric softener compartment to ensure sheets remain soft.
Finally, bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) can also help you eliminate rust stains. Simply cover the stain with a thick paste of bicarbonate and a little water and rub gently before proceeding with a regular wash.
Remove rust whilst washing
Light rust stains can be easily removed from sheets during a wash cycle:
Sodium percarbonate is a very effective whitening remedy which works well to remove rust stains. Simply add this product directly into the washing machine's drum and do a wash set at at least 40 degrees C (if possible [check the labels] do a 60 degree C wash).
Hydrogen peroxide can be used not only as a pre-treatment but also to remove stains from fabrics when used directly in the washing machine. In this case, put a spoonful of 3- or 10-volume HP solution into the drum together with the detergent and start the wash.
Your sheets will be as white as snow afterwards!
