10 aromatic plants to perfume your home in a natural way
Do you dream of having an always-perfumed home to welcome you and your guests when you enter the house? Then this article is for you! In fact, we want to suggest a number of plants capable of releasing a pleasant smell in the environment around where you choose to place them.
All these plants are easy to find and do not require special attention for their care. So let's begin a journey dedicated to a unique olfactory experience - it's up to you to decide which to choose for your home!
1. Basil
This aromatic plant certainly needs no introduction: we all use it to decorate and/or flavor our dishes using its leaves. However, its fragrance has a pleasant smell and is strong enough to spread even in very spacious environments. We advise you to grow this herb on your kitchen's balcony so that you can combine both of its useful properties!
Additional note: did you know that there are also flavored versions or with variegated leaves, in different shapes or different colours? There's cinnamon basil, Greek basil, red basil... Think of how many ways you can decorate and perfume your home!
2. Sage
Sage is an aromatic plant much loved for its intense scent in the kitchen and beyond. In addition to perfuming the environment, sage is ideal for covering up kitchen cooking odors. We therefore recommend placing it on a south-facing windowsill and making sure that the environment never gets too cold. This plant prefers dry air, so try to avoid environments that are too humid. Finally, one last tip: avoid growing it in the same pot as rosemary as both plants tend to produce many roots and risk suffocating each other.
3. Jasmine
Jasmine is a plant that we usually associate with the outdoors, but it can also be grown indoors, especially in spacious environments such as the living room. The most suitable variety for the home environment is "Jasminum polyanthum". Remember to prune it regularly and keep the soil moist (but without overwatering it). Its delicate scent will spread a pleasant fragrance throughout your home!
4. Lavender

If we talk about aromatic plants, we cannot help but include the much-loved lavender! This Mediterranean plant has an unmistakable scent, and there are many varieties of it too (so you can never go wrong). It loves sunny spots, and should only be watered when the soil dries out. Furthermore, don't forget to prune it at least once a year, shortening the branches to the green, non-barked parts.
5. Gardenia
The gardenia variety known as "Gardenia Jasminoides" is perfect for home environments. It grows very well even in semi-shaded conditions and its white flowers emit an intoxicating scent. Be sure to provide plenty of water for this plant and prune it regularly to keep it healthy.
6. Eucalyptus
If you love the fresh, rejuvenating scent of eucalyptus, you'll be happy to know that this plant can grow indoors too! Eucalyptus is widely used to produce soaps, perfumes and creams thanks to its much-loved and sought-after aroma. Place this plant in a location near a source of natural light and water it only occasionally. Even without having flowers, its scent will spread throughout your home!
7. Laurel
Laurel is a plant much-loved for its characteristic smell. Originally from Asia Minor, this plant can also be grown in apartments in pots. We recommend placing it on a sunny windowsill and watering it every time the soil gets dry. Its leaves emit a wonderful scent: you can also burn some of the leaves in a terracotta container to obtain an intense perfume capable of counteracting any unpleasant smells.
8. Peppermint
The aroma of peppermint is certainly strong and pungent, but this smell gives one a sensation of "freshness". This plant has been used since ancient times and among its many properties is as an effective analgesic and disinfectant: in short, keeping mint in your home can only bring benefits!
9. Parsley
Parsley is used extensively in the culinary world and for good reason; its scent is able to cover up unpleasant smells. So, parsley is not just for the kitchen: you could very well decide to place a few jars of this plant throughout your home!
10. Melissa
This herbaceous perennial (aka lemon balm) is almost indestructible, has a unique citrus and minty smell, and you can even use all of its parts: leaves, stems and flowers. Herbal teas are prepared using its dried leaves, but it is also useful for flavoring dishes. It is grown in sunny spots, but not in direct sunlight.
