10 creative DIY projects using recycled wooden boxes and crates
Recycling old wooden boxes and fruit crates for use in interior design is so popular these days that they are even sold now in shops. So, whether recycled, repurposed or bought, these containers can be a great furnishing resource.
These boxes can be easily converted and can act as baskets, shelves and bedside tables, pot plant holders and various other useful objects. Check out the ideas below:
Small, wooden furnishings
To make this useful table, all you need is a wooden box/crate in good condition (or restored to good condition) and a bit of paint. Add some thin, metal legs and you have a wonderful coffee table to place next to a sofa or the bed.
Need more storage space? Simply stack two boxes on top of each other, add feet or wheels to the bottom and your "new" bedside table is ready for use!
DIY fruit crate planters
Sand to remove any splinters, paint and you're done: this old fruit crate can now hold potted plants. And cute with or without feet or wheels!
Bookcases
Lots of books to store, but no bookcase? With wooden crates, you can start building one and add other "modules" whenever needed. The important thing is to ensure the crates are properly secured and stabile.
Wall units
In the kitchen, the laundry room, the bathroom and more: wooden crates can become storage units and shelves mounted on the walls of almost any room.
Also ideal for small spaces
You can adapt furniture made with crates however you want, filling small spaces and unused corners and niches.
Raised planters
If you put a wooden crate on long legs with the open part facing upwards, it can be used as a pot plant holder, for example!
A creative side-table
Wooden boxes can become table legs themselves: place at the ends and joined by a wooden board (perhaps an old shutter, for example), they create a perfect side-table/console for corridors and foyers/entranceways!
Wooden crates coffee table
A coffee table for the living room: four boxes, placed side by side and secured together, with the openings facing outwards to offer space for storage. And you can make this table more elegant by adding a glass top.
Useful storage items
Wooden crates originally acted as sturdy containers, so why not continue to use them as such? They can store magazines, blankets, toys, or anything else you typically find scattered around the rooms!
