Worn-out shirt collar: what can we do?
The "operation" to repair a worn collar is not a difficult job. Completely replacing the collar would be a major job and very complex - even for an experienced tailor. This is not something we would recommend trying.
The only way to hide the worn out area is to add a layer of fabric. But don't worry - it's not difficult to do this, as you can see in the video below:
Repairing a worn-out shirt collar: a quick and easy method
The fundamental issue is to find fabric of the right color: therefore look for scraps which are as close as possible in color. Even if it's not exactly the same, it doesn't matter, but there shouldn't be too much color contrast!
Once you have found a suitable material , equip yourself with some chalk, a long ruler, scissors, pins and then a needle and thread (or a sewing machine). An iron will also be needed.
The task is to transfer the exact shape of the collar to be repaired onto the scrap repair fabric. Open the collar, place it on the repair fabric, pin it in place and mark the outline in chalk.
Cut out the shape made and then place it on the collar, starting to secure it with a seam along the lower side, along the shoulders. You will then join the edges of the fabric on the rest of the collar, with a light seam, and slowly you will see that the shirt is like new again.
