Bathroom tiles and natural humidity in the environment: the result of this combination can be mold growing and turning the grouting black... unless you take preventative steps. But if you see mold growing, don't despair: there's a lot of things you can do to solve this problem.

Check out the tips below:

What you will need to clean moldy grouting

Let's start with the tools: there are special mold-removing brushes you can buy. But an old toothbrush will work just as well (especially if it's hard-bristled); an old nail brush will also work for this chore.

As for the cleaning detergent, you can use baking soda nd citric acid. However, to eliminate mold spores, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar or bleach are best.

To be precise, vinegar can stop the growth of many types of mold, but not all of them. Hydrogen peroxide and bleach are more effective and work quicker too. But the use of bleach is only recommended for extreme cases.

For seriously blackened grouting, equip yourself with gloves and a mask, and prepare a bowl of bleach to scrub onto the grouting. Remember to ventilate the room well afterwards.

If, on the other hand, the situation is not so extreme, you can do the same using hydrogen peroxide, perhaps mixing it with bicarbonate or citric acid in order to create a slightly abrasive paste that will help you better scrape away the black mold. This consistency also helps the hydrogen peroxide adhere to surfaces without slipping off too soon, thus doing its job against mold.

Vinegar should be mixed with citric acid, since when mixed with baking soda, the two "cancel" each other, and can be used in the same way.

However, if we get into the habit of spraying a solution of vinegar and water, or hydrogen peroxide and plain water, on the tiles when we do routine cleaning, we can prevent mold from forming.
