Stained terracotta floors: find out the best ways to make them look like new again
Terracotta floors are a very popular choice for homes - both inside and outside. They have a classic charm, and match most styles and tastes. They are also extremely durable, adding value to our homes.
It is also true that, especially outdoors, terracotta surfaces get dirty and need to be cleaned. Let's see together how to remove stains from terracotta flooring.
Terracotta needs to be treated differently to other hard surfaces when being cleaned. There is no shortage of specific products on the market for this chore: most of these use phosphoric acid, an agent capable of removing stubborn dirt without damaging the terracotta.
However, it is not easy to source and use phosphoric acid and we advise against trying to do so.
As an alternative, you can use white vinegar and dishwashing liquid. Just one cup of vinegar for a bucket full of hot water - to which you should add a few drops of detergent (a spoonful). Mix this solution well and use a rag to wipe over the terracotta. Then rinse off and allow to and dry.
If you need to remove more stubborn stains, you can first try rubbing a light paste made with bicarbonate of soda and a little water on the stains, to be rubbed on using a sponge or cloth.
