Elegant curtains, dainty skirts like those worn by ballerinas, dresses and more: when washing garments made in whole or part from netting (aka tulle), we need to be extra-careful. So, how should we go about doing this?

Washing at too high a temperature, or with aggressive products, can damage netting irreparably. But this does not mean you always have to wash netted clothes by hand. With care, you can use the washing machine.

The first thing to do is to determine from which material the netting is made:

  • Organza: this must be washed by hand, or on the delicate cycle in the washing machine, at a maximum temperature of 30°. Never wring out these fabrics by hand, and turn off the spin cycle of the washing machine.
  • Polyester: you can wash polyester by both by hand and in the washing machine, but without exceeding 40°.
  • Cotton: here, it is also best not to exceed 40°.
  • Silk: silk is as delicate as organza, so prefer cold or only slightly warm temperatures and no spinning or aggressive handling.

In all cases, it is advisable not to use the spin cycle as this could tear the fabric or cause a run in the netting.

Furthermore, it is usually never necessary to iron netting: just lay the netting out flat to avoid creases and wrinkles from forming.

Detergents: you can add baking soda to delicate wash detergents for an enhanced washing result. In the case of old stains, you can try to whiten these using hydrogen peroxide or a mild bleach before washing. If, on the other hand, you want to try using classic bleach, always dilute it first with warm water. Use very little and only as a last resort.
