To unblock your sink, you just need a few simple ingredients:
- sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
- dishwashing liquid
- white vinegar
- a plastic bag.
Start by pouring one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid down the drain, followed by one-half teaspoon of baking soda and two tablespoons of white vinegar. A chemical reaction will instantly take place and will produce foam. Now, the plastic bag comes into play: place it over the drain to cut off exposure to the air. The absence of oxygen will increase the strength of the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar, allowing you to get better results. Leave this in place until the reaction has stopped, then remove the bag and run some water. Your drain should be unblocked now.
To prevent future blockages, you can adopt a few simple precautions, which allow you to keep your drain always perfectly clean:
- remove solid food residue before putting your pots, pans and dishes into the sink;
- always use a drain filter to catch any other residue;
- avoid pouring oily or greasy substances and liquids down the drain, which could harden and block the pipes;
- periodically flush the sink, drain and pipes with baking soda and vinegar.
