Clean and deodorized cooler bags: achieve this easily using these tips

Cooler bags are a real godsend for keeping perishable foods we have to transport in top condition. And, we all know we need to keep the inside of cooler bags as cold as possible by adding, for example, ice blocks. But, inevitably, some melting does take place and condensation will always form on the inside of these bags.

Because of this, it is necessary to ensure we clean out our cooler bags regularly. Luckily, it's not at all difficult to carry out this chore.

The methods described below are also applicable to refrigerators or iceboxes/igloos.

First, we must always make sure that we have eliminated any solid dirt or residue from inside the cooler bags. Giving them a good shake should dislodge most solid dirt.

At this point, we can equip ourselves with a sponge, a bowl filled with warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid. We can now wash out the inside of the bags and wipe off with a damp cloth. Once finished, use a dry cloth to dry off. However, if smells remain, pour a spoonful of baking soda into the bag and close it tightly. After a few hours, remove the baking soda, and the bag will be as good as new.

For stubborn dirt, on the other hand, dip a sponge in a little white vinegar, and rub it on the affected areas until the dirt disappears. Don't use too much vinegar which could soak the bag and leave a persistant smell. Then, wash the bag out as described above.

Finally, it may happen that the bag has an external casing of fabric or canvas which is best to wash by hand (and not in the washing machine. A basin of warm (not hot) water with laundry detergent, or even Marseille soap, will suffice, soaking the casing for a couple of hours before scrubbing any stains away.

When everything is cleaned properly, deodorized and dry, you can put the bags back into storage - ready for your next trip!
