Sheets of newspaper placed into food containers: it's the no-cost tip to solve a common problem

Food containers are essential in any home, but to make the most of them, it's good to have some newspaper to hand. There are various types of food containers and they range in size and how they are sealed. These containers are used, for example, to store foodstuffs in the fridge, freezer or to transport packed lunches.

Often, however, we can detect a trace of the smell of the food that a container has stored. But instead of scrubbing with soap and water to remove these residual smells, we use newspaper.

As stated above, containers - especially plastic containers - can absorb food residue (like juicesoils and grease) and eventually give off an unpleasant odor.

One (fatiguing) way to clean containers is to wash them thoroughly with normal dishwashing detergent, and then leave them to soak further in water and vinegar or water and baking soda overnight. But sometimes this is not practical solution (especially in a busy kitchen).

It's here that a few sheets of newspaper can help us: if you have clean, but smelly, containers, just take one or two sheets of newspaper and put them in the container - a bit like lining the insides (and don't be afraid of crumpling them). For an even better result, we can also sprinkle some baking soda on the newspaper. Close the lid and leave overnight: when you reopen the container and throw away the newspaper, there will no longer be any smell!
